The only mentality for hauling asphalt is to agree with the surge (which is minimal, btw) and climb up on the deck, stretch the boom, climb your trailer, open the hatch, and "voila!" . . . watch it til it fills. You'll get to know the 3257 or 61-22 differences in no time. Less than rocket science, a few boots/jeans that will forever be "asphalted," but other than that, WHAT mentality? The PTO works on your clutch... easy! C'mon the wife can do it, and is. Up to you, man. Wouldn't go ANY other way, here. (and your trailer, even when empty, with a "heel" left, as usually there is, most likely won't get away from you, empty!) Good luck whatever you decide, but to me / us, is the easiest way to get in and out....and make the $$ ~!

If Chinatown is right about McKenzie, they would bear strong consideration. The father of an old Army buddy retired from there. He lives in Ludowici, I believe the terminal was in Jesup, but not 100% sure.

    He really liked working there.

Hey @GolfPro Where are you going to school? I live in Rincon and have been contemplating the same thing...and thinking about going tanker. Also a question... any of the tanker jobs in the area hire husband wife teams and would there be any real benefit to that?

Hi, I just graduated from Orangeburg/Calhoun Technical College in Orangeburg. I did inquire into Savannah Tech as it's closer to home but I would have had to find a truck in SC to take the CDL test which would have been a pain, so I just made the 75-minute drive each day to Orangeburg. I'm going to take Chinatown's advice and apply for tanker positions. Schneider has an opportunity out of Savannah for new CDL grads so I've applied for that. As for your second question, I really don't know as I'm learning all this stuff myself. I would also like to team with my wife but I was unable to persuade her to give our two kids away so we could do it! (That's a joke, for those who might think otherwise.)

The whole CPM pay thing is set up to confuse a driver. A driver has nothing to compare a CPM job to. And if many CPM drivers, (especially at the mega crap companies) broke their pay down to a hourly wage it would be less than minimum wage. That would not be easy to convince a new driver to pay for their trucking school if they were truthful about the situation.

A whole lot of conditions that surround the pay rate effect the actual value of the job. Like Chinatown says accessorial pay makes the difference. But, the other questions is how willing, if at all, is the company willing to pay what they promise. Almost, every trucker has a story about being beaten out of layover, detention, or loading pay. Some companies never pay it.

@Chinatown - know if any of the above companies have tanker routes around SE PA? I'm considering the tanker option too.
