Does anyone with a Ph.D in The Code of Federal Regulations know why the weight of GVWR of a CGRVR above 26k was chosen as requiring a CDL (excluding Haz Mat and Passenger). Is there any empirical evidence that demonstrates vehicles greater than this weight are more 'dangerous' there by requiring greater regulation? Other countries have chosen different weights for 'CDL' requirements such as the EU which is 7,500 kilos (16,500 lbs). Even saw a country that uses Gross Vehicle Mass.

Is this number arbitrary? Where did it come from? Someone somewhere sometime must have proposed it.

    Is it the right number?

I see some crazy things with sub 26k Penske style box trucks.

My guess is, vehicle classes. Manufactures design vehicles spec'd by what weight government deems safe the class is allowed to carry and thus 26 applies to every vehicle that requires heavier equipment which the gov prefers people are specifically trained to use and so 26 means, some pansy committee created those classes to tax them differently.

The short answer ... More regulation = more money for the gov

I bet accidents in the old days can be accredited to the sub-divisions

simple answer, a committee decided. All about where the money came from.

The committee was formed in 1950's under Eisenhower,

full name is; The national Vehicle Size and Weight Team, a part of the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Office of Freight Management and Operations

Most of the numbers and threshold of dot ICC specs comes from rating in the 50s when the interstate system was being developed.

Look at the green book and u still see pics of trucks from the 50s.

Not only is government out of touch, they are out of date, too.

Now that Dodge sells a pickup truck that is rated to tow 31,000 lbs it will be interesting to see if the laws change.
