Going tanker with Comcar CTL - what can I expect?

    It was a close call between this company and doing flatbed with McElroy, but in the end I decided to go with driving tankers out of Savannah. Mainly it's because I believe this gives me the greatest earning potential down the road. I have also applied for hazmat and TWIC.

    A couple of questions for now (may have more later):

    In terms of income, what can I expect the first year and years going forward? CTL pays 45¢ per mile to start.

    I know what we learned in school about driving tankers, but in practical terms, how is it different?

    I've talked to some tanker drivers that only made $50K the first year and personally worked with two new cdl grads that made $65K the first year. Your first year will be the lowest in pay, but still better than most college grads.
    There's drivers with Trimac that make over $100K.
    In 24 months you can write your own ticket. Good choice going with tankers.

    "Only" $50K? Wow, I've never even come close to sniffing that kind of income...and yes, I have a bachelor's degree. That's promising. I hope CTL turns out to be a good choice. I also thought about Schneider but they start at only 32¢ per mile, according to the recruiter I talked to last week. I know that cpm isn't everything but I figure the 13¢ difference is too great to pass up.

    Yes, that's right...."Only $50K". I normally pulled hazmat liquid but occasionally pulled non-hazmat dry bulk. Sometimes unloaded beside Bulkmatic trucks and those drivers were making $65K and mostly hauled flour for that particular customer; Bisquick in Kansas City.

    Been pulling tankers for a couple of years now....just take it easy, be patient and watch the curves. Love what I do and hope you do too

    By going with a COMCAR Company you can transfer to the other divisions if you wish after doing a year. I pull Plant Loads in reefers for MCT out of Sanford, Fl. I have talked to a couple of the Tanker Boys. They seem to be happy. Most seem to pull non HazMat loads, Dry Tanks but they do some HazMat. Good Luck and I agree with the previous post, good choice to pick Tankers. After a year or two you can write ur own ticket.

    Starting out in tankers is the best move a rookie can make in my opinion. I doubt I'll ever pull anything else. Making 65k plus a year isn't even hard especially after that first year.

    You should document your experience for us over in the tanker forum. We don't get to many Comcar drivers over there.

    If I only made 50k it would mean I only worked about 7 months that year.
