What's your choice and why? I personally love AMT's. I feel that I have more control when backing up and I could care less about shifting.
I can double clutch or float gears with the best of them but I'd rather concentrate on my surroundings than shift the trans. I never had any issues with AMT's.
Any thoughts? Just curious.

I love the ultrashift plus! I think the old school truckers feel threatened by it cause that's their only skill!

Power steering ruined trucking.

What skill do you have? Inability to find a gear could be classed as a 'skill', I suppose. Have you ever driven a truck with manual steering? Springs instead of air ride? You have no clue how stupid you sound. Also, OP, if you think shifting keeps you from concentrating on your surroundings, you are clueless. Why would you be shifting when backing? Keep holding your wheel and have a nice, dull automatic day. Keep your brain turned off13grinder, BigHossVolvo, BigRedNY and 9 others Thank this.

Sounds like he may suffer from hemorrhoids, put some air in your seat and enjoy the advances in technology. You not gonna win an award for suffering

This is a fact. When you shift your using your left leg and right hand. That means you're using both parts of your brain at the same time. Also your using your motor skills while also trying to use your visual and perceptive skills. So that means your multitasking your brain. I'm not saying its a bad thing but those are facts.
Interesting point about boredom though. I never really thought about it that way. In my case I use my free time to scan my perimeter and keep my space cushion. I could see how some drivers might slack off though.
I've never driven a manual steering truck and won't. Why would I? I would never work for a company that has that kind of equipment.
As far as backing up I can do both manual trans and amt but I feel that a manual trans backs to fast as I don't use the clutch as a break.
I guess my real question should have been has anyone had any bad experiences with AMT's that changed their minds about them?
