That one dude in the video paid $400 for lumpers. Probably $1200 in todays money or more. I wouldnt think lumpers would be that high back then.

Wow... I live around Hickory NC , not far from Valdese. I hauled sticks (furniture) for W&L like Mr Zimmerman. That brought back some memories.

I still haul sticks. Still run that west coast turn. One thing is for certain. This gets in your blood. Some of us are born for this. Thank God I found a good woman that understands it.

 

That fellow at the 17-18 minute point that was haulin "hot" freight was what I did in April & May of 1973. Loaded in Van Nuys, Ca., hid the bills in the sleeper & took out my little typewriter & typed up a new bill of lading consigning the load to the "distributing" co. on the door of my 69 KW COE. Took the load to Cleveland missing as many scales as possible & running mostly a night. The guy I worked for had the route, detours, timing all layed out for me. Made 10 cents p/mile, cash. Made 4 trips hauling different loads back each time. Was not the life I wanted. Sure brings back the memories....

 

Hi truckdad, oh yeah, lots of "shady" loads, mostly from trip lease ( do they still do that?) You always took the "advance", because sometimes that's all you'd see. ( but it got you back, and they knew that) No electronic load boards either, just notes on a bulletin board, or chalk on a blackboard. Good backhauls were exchanged at the coffee counter, 2 log books ( if any) and a bogus BOL. ( 1 T/L freight, all kinds, 42,000lbs). You wouldn't believe how many times that bogus BOL got me out of a jam. You knew the guys at the scale, they knew you, it was no big deal. ( if they let you go, donuts were in order the next time through). I tell ya', THAT was truckin'!!!
