Go on craigslist in Chicago... They have a lot of European owned companies that have drivers doing what you do... Might have better luck with one of these companies versus a mega like swift, and they don't use DAC

Forget Swift. Work for a temp. agency. There's many temp agencies that hire truckers.

 

You are using the term "friends" rather loosely PackRat.

 

A company called CTI hires "casual" type drivers. Just show up when you feel like running or stay home if you don't.
You mentioned Phoenix. They have a terminal in kingman AZ.
A good friend of mine's father owns the company, makes sure his equipment is kept beautiful, which is good because obviously it's slip-seating.

I really like their driver facing cameras and how they can listen to your phone calls. That's a big plus!
