As I understand it, any truck built before 2000 is exempt from the E-log mandate.

Wow, I'm all for that. It's kind of strange though, since it can be done by GPS.

As I understand it, a legal E-log needs to plug into the trucks ECM, a capability not commonly available on pre-2000 trucks.

Um yes, it is simple case of more trucks and drivers perusing the limited amount of freight. That causes the prices paid to trucking companies to be lower, and there fore wages to drivers are lower... add in that there are over 100 eager willing I wanna drive a truck every week going to orientations in 50 different locations, to take the place of all those guys who MIGHT quit, and it will not make a bit of difference in the big picture...

Careful there driver. As I understand it, the mandate exempts only pre-year 2000 trucks.
Meaning if you have a model year 2000 rig, you have to comply. Only those with '99s or before don't get hosed.....

How will ELDs change the hours of service? All those who are saying that they will no longer be able to do their job on a ELD is just reinforcing the governments point. The real issue is the rules of service , not the type of Log Book used.

I agree 100%. Problem is, they don't seem interested in changing the hours of service to allow any flexibility. So paper logs have been the only way.
And before anybody says anything, walk a mile in my shoes. I haul frac sand (oilfield). Many times it's a short haul. Last job I did was a 15 mile haul from plant to location. You can get several loads a day. But when you get to location with that last one, and the well goes down for a couple of hours and you only had an hour to give, you have two choices after unloading: park on the county dirt road, which, in this case, was wide enough for one vehicle, so you'd be blocking the whole road and all the other trucks all night, or drive a few miles to the truck stop.
The lawmakers need to take into consideration that not all of us are OTR. We can't all pick and choose which truck stop to park at, and shut down early in case there isn't parking at our first choice. They think one set of rules fits every application, and it's just not the case.
    I'm just glad I've got a '99 model.

do you really think the mega fleets are going to pay their drivers more if they are getting more to take the loads? They'll just pocket the extra money and forget about the drivers because if someone complains there is always someone else to hold the wheel in the truck.
