I would say that it's a fair guess that 65 percent of even the Made in the USA's new O/O's have no idea what their cost to operate is.

    It's closer to 98 percent.

Edit to add: and I'd bet the same percentage of brokers run their business just as fly by night with out a clue.

BC most aren't brokers themselves as much as they are agents for large brokerage houses and have no clue about why thy do and what value they add (where applicable).

Ie lots of fresh young newbies that have no sales experience and think what they are selling is worth buying.

And yet most truck owners either can't figure it out or won't make the effort. just like most brokers are so busy rate cutting each other on the cheap freight with such tiny slim margins they can't get their act together long enough to score a customer worth having.

Last week a friend of mine said he'd love to get $1.65 pulling his hopper. Tonight, another friend said he hasn't pulled a load with his hopper for less than $2 for the last 2 years with the exception of one load for $1.95. I pulled a 53' dry van 2 years ago with fuel at double the price it is now, and back then, a "decent" rate was $1.80. I averaged $2.49 loaded miles after sorting out the good brokers from the bad.
I have experienced TQL paying from $1.50 to $3.50 for a nearly identical load within a week's timeframe. Bad brokers are the problem. There is no negotiating with that kind, but they don't stay around for long anyway, so "nice knowin' ya, Bob" !

We run reefers, but yes rates are bad. Brokers have said fuel is down so rates are down. Well that is great but fuel is not our only bill! The last 2 weeks have been decent. Getting 2 a mile is about average for us
