Everybody learns at different paces but none of these companies could care less.they have a policy and sticks to that.now I'm hearing all you need is four months exp to train someone said crengland hires at three months,no drivers are even close to being ready to train.but because it's now the carriers policy they re good to go no matter what.wonder what it takes to demote a trainer back to driver status,maybe hitting five low bridges,doing a few illegal uturns hitting trks while trying to back at the receiver.I can go on and on but u get the picture.

What's the purpose of a trainer other than to teach company/customer protocols and use of special equipment such as tankers or OS/OD loads? Why does a trainer need to be in the truck more than two weeks pulling reefers or vans or flatbed? I don't get it?

You must not read any of the articles involving new drivers and accidents.these drivers are so not ready for the road but companies turn them loose anyway only to tarnish the industry even more.but you Chinatown has a forgiving nature you think anybody who wants to drive trk should no matter what.sure veterans have accidents as well but there's way more new drivers that have accidents and getting worse.nobody reads maps anymore reads signs does pretrips the list is endlist.today's drivers is nothing more then steering wheel holders.

the industry is never going to be 100% safe but it would be a lot better then it is now if folks had proper training and with an exp safe driver.this industry is well below average on safety.it's probably not even at 40%.finbyrd Thanks this.

It goes much deeper then just this. Actually a proper orientation should cover a lot of things like company policy. I think a trainer's main job is things like teaching time management and routing, and how to log properly. A good trainer will make sure a green driver can use a good truckers atlas like the Rand McNally one. A good trainer also should be teaching good dock manners. A trainer should also be teaching a green driver good go no go decision making because of bad weather. But I think the most important thing a trainer does is teach the framework of proper backing. I know its not possible for a trainer to teach every possible backing situation, but with a good framework a green driver at least has a good idea how to do a complicated back the right way. It takes some time to teach this. Then the green driver builds experience as they do all of this alone. This also takes time to master and this is why someone with limited experience should never be teaching it.finbyrd and Bob Dobalina Thank this.

Very well said and I wish companies would hire trainers like that but unfortunately that's too difficult for companies to comprehend.

But it all goes back the lack of a real CDL testing program and hard tests to weed out people who can't drive no matter what.
The idea of a trainer trying to teach someone how to drive really is stupid, the guy already has a license, he is legal to drive but one thing I learned interviewing a lot of these people is they can't teach common sense or a truck sense of how to drive.
When I was doing the dedicated route thing, I had a customer who had one dock and I was hauling chemicals for their production. It seemed that Werner had one driver who was also on a dedicated route and he was a 'trainer'. I have had several times sit a while when a driver and this "trainer" tried to back a truck up in a dock I needed to get into. One time it was 45 minutes of sitting there watching back and forth, back and forth, this was a simple straight shot with so much room you could back an aircraft carrier into the dock. -

there is no real cd l program anymore it's all about money and the students are getting ripped off big time.youre paying four grand and only receiving 500.00 worth of training.I'm not blaming the new drivers but I blame schools,motor carriers for not training the right way.just because someone has a CDL doesn't mean they should already know how to drive trk.I said in a previous post ppl learn at different paces.just because you learned at a fast pace doesn't mean everyone else should too.if driving trk was that easy then everyone would be doing it.companies have no idea what real training is and they don't care either.as I'm typing this there's another new driver doing the unthinkable but yet it's acceptable because carriers are not going to change how they operate unless forced and we all know that'll never happen.of course there's no common since,why should there be when their employers don't care.

Everyone is doing it. There's 3 million drivers on the road in America. That's about the same amount of people working fast food.
