Wow....
The question that needs to be asked is
What is wrong?rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate reading your thoughts and opinions. -
No receive?
No transmit?
The radio doesn't turn on?
We have to assume things that may lead you down the wrong path.
My advice?
Let's start with the basics.
Get rid of the linear, get rid of the add on junk in the radio and put the radio on the bench to get it tuned RIGHT. Once that is done and it is working consistently, then look at the antenna, replace the coax, and check or replace the mount(s). Get rid of the springs, have the antenna tuned right with an antenna analyser then see what it is like.
After that add a good mic and some power if you want behind the radio (get a new jumper too).
All of that was said may not be wrong, but starting with the basics is what you should do.
Hope that helps.Ougigoug, handlebar and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Id get the 29 checked out, and run it. Especially if its an old side mic, those were good 'ol radio's. Then, if you want something a lil fancier down the road, start shopping around.

I run the DX 979. Its the same board as the 959. With a couple extra features they just removed the freq counter. This went to an external plug. I like the 979 because it has blue LED's. I've put a 60 horse power kit in it. It keys at 12 and reves to 60 pep.
If you do not care about yacking on side band and dont want the freq counter. There is a 949 AM only version that is much cheaper.
Im a vintage radio fanatic so I understand everyone saying to rebuild the 29. My opinion to you is in the finals. 29's religiously put out 7-1/2 watts dead key and peak at 20-21 watts. The new radios with Mosfets key at 10-12 and peak at 30-31 average. You can also turn the power knob on the front down to 3 wts if you find you want a heater later on. Another consideration is new radios are good to go. Vintage radios can develope cold joints and cracked boards. Save them for your smooth riding car lol
Point being I like a 30 watt radio over a 20 watt radio. Plus, like General Lee, the Galaxy chassis is made by Ranger. There are parts galor and many people know how to fix them. At this point it's "Choose Your Poison".
Antennas... The Francis hot rod was bought by BarJan and then that other company you see now in truck stops. They changed the way they manafacture the gutts. They used to flatten the twin coils going up inside the fiberglass changing the way the coil radiated. Now, they just use a smaller guage round wire. Im not a scientist, but I just don't like when a company buys a brand then cheapens it. Look what's happened to the Road King 56
Hustler still is family owned in Texas. I run a HQ-27 and quite easily freeband into Quabec from west Texas on 50 horse power.Grant Industrial Trans Thanks this. -
Thanks Everybody. I appreciate the conversation. I am a bit worried about the old Cobra getting beat to death in my truck. It's HD springs all around, and will drive a nun to cuss, it hits so hard. lol
