You probably won't find the 2 numeral Galaxy radios at any truckstop except maybe at a radio shop adjacent. Some Pilots and Js are selling 959s, and some Road Rangers have 949s. The TA at Janesville, WI had the smaller SSB Galaxy 979 I think it is and others had the AM only version with blue lighting (939?).
Night Ranger Thanks this. -
I've got 3 and I bought them all used or traded for them.
-
I'm enjoying my new 959, stock, fresh out the box. I don't think I'm letting anybody in this radio.
1-5 watts on the variable knob, and 80% modulation. I'm tempted to turn the modulation up, but I'm getting good reports.
Good conditions, I've talk 10 miles to base stations. Haven't determined road range it varies with other trucks set up. But this radio has great ears.
Haven't made any ssb contacts yet, but I hear them. They just don't seem to be able to hear me. The only thing noticeably off of the clarifier is not right at 12 o'clock.
The meter is very accurate. I have it paired to a Wilson 5000, with swr on ch 1/20/40 @ 1.1/1.1/1.1
The tweaked up dx44v is under the bunk. I've heard a professional peak/tune, alignment is $60.00. I'm hard pressed to see the benefits of that.
My peak/tuned/clipped cobra 29 and Galaxy 979 didn't talk or hear no further, this big radio either. The big radio has echo, but I think the AMC was removed because with talk back on I can't sit next to the speaker without it squealing.
Stock Radios for the win.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
how did you manage that?
-
I changed the stock 5" shaft for a 10", and used my little see meter to trim the whip until my swr ended up where they are. The galaxy meter just reads those numbers as just below 1.5. The galaxy meter does not move with the astatic meter in the line.
I have a Browning BR-78 that I could only get down to 1.3/1.3/1.1
My 5/8 top load, I haven't tested again since it was over 2.1rabbiporkchop and skellr Thank this. -
Is this the 959B which is supposed to have an improved receive?
-
No, I didn't want the Starlite on my radio. And the 959 and 959b are the exact same inside. These newer ones all have the MOSFET finals. Don't know about having better receive.
-
Effingham radio was saying the B model also has the schottsky receive upgrade from the factory.
-
They are wrong. I spoke with Galaxy.
If true, so does the non B model. They are exactly the same besides the Starlite. I was under the same impression until I spoke with Galaxy.Neverready Thanks this.
