You should NEVER have to do an actual regen on your truck. If your truck is at that stage where a regen is actually needed something else is going on OR it has a lot of idle hours. The only emissions issue I have had was when those two wires melted and damaged the wiring harness. The 2010 and later emissions engines were designed to virtually eliminate the need for active regens. Active regens are mainly seen in more severe service duty cycles and high idle operations.

Well that makes sense the only times the regen lights have come on is when I had to idle to charge the batteries after sitting overnight for my 10 and not driving. It usually happens in the morning after I drained the batteries watching tv, running the bunk heater and charging up the computer over night.

The shop manager didn't act like it was a big deal and since all I had to do was drive it for a passive regen to get everything working I just wanted to stop by a dealer and ask a few questions.

Is yours a Cummins or a Maxxforce? If it is a Maxxforce does it have DEF?

Cummins ISX. I looked in the manual and it confirmed what we are talking about. If you run the engine at low temps or idle too long the warning icons pop up and it needs a passive regen.

I am hoping to finalize a deal this week on a truck. After thinking more about it I felt having my own truck is a better deal. I would have complete freedom in maintaining it and if for some reason things don't go well I could take it somewhere else. It is a 2012 Peterbilt 386. It is a trade from a local company. I was able to get all maintenance records on it and an ECM download. It has 490k miles and only 3% idle time; it has an APU on it. Not a dent, scratch, scuff, or stain on it. The dealer is working on a couple issues I noticed, nothing major, and the lender is meeting me today to finish some final details. Will see how it all goes.

Wait. I thought you were going to lease the company truck you've been driving?

Correct. In the meantime I have kept an eye out for good deals. This truck has an APU, no idle time, great maintenance history, and allows me more freedom. I'm not saying the Knight truck is a bad deal but this one is a better deal.

Can you use that truck with Knight as a O/O or are you going to sign up with another carrier?

The guy has been sitting on it for awhile. The reason why is the gearing. It has a direct drive 10 speed with 2.64 rears. It isn't a 70 mph truck but that gearing will put me at 1300 rpm at 60 mph. I cruise at that speed anyway; for me it works. I drove it today and it drives great. It is very different than the Volvo but after a few days in it I think I'll be fine.

    jomar68 Thanks this.
