Eh, as far as travel in general goes, I think it depends on what region you are in and what you are doing; some states are pretty safe, and others are drug states. In my fiance's home town there, for a while you couldn't leave the town to the next one without gangs (not cartels) watching you...it really destroyed commerce for that little town for a while until they were flushed out. Not really relevant to trucking, though.
In the rural areas, you can be in serious trouble if people don't know who you are, especially if you are tall and very white like me. However, on the open highway during the day or anywhere in the main part of Guadalajra, it seemed as safe or safer than many American cities.
One time, her dad was travelling by bus across Mexico. A cartel hijacked it and went across the bus just pointing at people for them to get off. I doubt if many of them were ever seen again.
Cartels are a real danger, but I don't know how they effect the average truck driver there.
There are more tolls, but I was actually surprised by how nice many of the toll highways are.
think your old truck is in the junkyard ?..maybe not .

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm in Monterrey quite frequently. Mexico is pretty quiet right now. You still see 'bad guy' vehicles but not as much.
It also depends on how you present yourself. If you blend in, you're ok. If you're in a blacked out Escalade with rims you're asking for trouble.Ougigoug Thanks this. -
I think it matters even more in small towns. One of the first things my fiance and I did when I got there was go to the weekly Sunday night plaza festival so she could introduce me to all the local people (and come to tell me later, the local small town drug dealers that protect the area from cartels). Never had a problem.
The thought of me driving a rapper style rig there is downright comical.Cottonmouth85 Thanks this. -
I usually trade the Silverado for a Tsuru as soon as I get to the ol' ladys folks ranch.
Plaza festivals are a blast aren't they?
Congrats on the senorita, driver. Hope she's a good one like mine. -

I travel to Yucatan every years and they have a mix of either brand new trucks lot's of Kw and old worn out truck from USA & Canada.
Actually one guy has left his truck in front of our house with the windows down and the key in the ignition for few days, believe me he was the only one who could have drive his truck....Cottonmouth85 Thanks this. -
They are hard on everything. And will run over your ### at a truckstop. Better keep your head on a swivel.
