Good morning, the start of the year for freight is horrible especially in dry van, need some advice from my fellow truckers,I want to change companies but I don't know if that is smart seeing that freight is slow right now...most of the time when I get dispatched a load it either cancels or don't pay enough for me to even run my truck...I run team and I am getting average 1 load a week...I wonder if there is any companies that have consistent freight even through this time of year or are we all in the same boat...

If you are an owner operator, it costs significant dollars to change companies. The direct costs, changing base plates, lost time between contracts, whatever training period the new carrier requires. The indirect costs are how long the learning curve is to understand their customer base, how operations works, establishing a rapport and reputation with them.
You didn't mention how long you have been with your present carrier, and other than the freight is slow, if there are any other problems(not home often enough, heavy loads, unreasonable delivery times etc...)
Freight is slow all over, and many carriers will simply lie to you and tell you different, sign you up and let you sit. Since it doesn't cost them much to have you sit, there is incentive to have more trucks than the fleet needs just in case freight picks up. In my view it takes at least 4 seasons(1 year) to really get to know a carrier. Changing before that is counter productive. In the 40 years I have been in business I have been with 3 carriers.upallnite and rollin coal Thank this. -
I currently work for CRST,and I also train their students,I been with them of and on almost 3 years 2 years as a lp...you made a good point with carriers having a incentive for so many trucks sitting,I didn't really know that...its just really frustrating right now...

It is that time of year plus with the oil fields having come to a grind. I would consider all my options so you make the right move and not just moving into another I thought the grass was greener.

How about a dedicated run or linehaul work?

Someone stole my thunder. LOL. No but really these are great points. As bad as it may seem NOW is not the ideal time to be making a move. Is there better than CRST? You bet! Over the next 3-6 months would you lose a lot of money trying to make the move now? Most definitely. I would suggest (that means you don't have to listen lol) that you wait until the freight "starts" to pick up. That way the cost of moving will be slightly offset. And by the time you get through the learning curve you should have good freight and recoup your losses. Good luck no matter what you decide.

You say you have been a lp for a couple years, it may be you are getting close to paying the truck off and they are trying to get you to leave before getting your truck paid off. It really depends on how much you still owe on the truck. If you owe a lot, I would be finding somewhere else. It maybe slow, but not one load a week slow, especially as a trainer.
-
As a lp, you cant be making any money at 1 load a week, so it is in your best interest to go somewhere else.

I know right,I was in Cali a week ago and sat for 5 days...smh
