So you could have stopped but chose to rear end another flatbed because you thought the car behind you might not stop in time? I am sorry but i dont think there is a single veteran driver out here that thinks like that. Hopefully there is not another trucker on the road taught to do this. This is extremely flawed and dangerous thinking. Sir that thinking scares the **** out of me.
If you tell this story to future employers the way i interpreted it , i think you might be looking awhile.

I will never believe a 44 year driver would do that. This has got to be a spoof.
-
I don't believe he was saying his 44 years exp. was truck driving. that said, hopefuly you learned that it's more important to avoid the rear end in front of you, than worrying about the rear end behind you.
-
If it's there I'll grab an exit to avoid those that like to huddle like cars do. if no exit slow down and let it pass. a pull out can work too.

If this accident happened on I40 mile marker 35 in Tn. I was there. He Hit the back end of a 48 ft box. The steering wheel cut him in half. -
He well have been driving 44 years. Some of the most aggressoive, impatient, unprofessional, and asinine drivers I have met out here all claimed to be driving since Jesus was on the planet.
All 3 times that I have been rear ended was by 20+ year owner ops.
Experience doesn't mean the you're immune to complacency or arrogance.

Hah! Yeah, Craigslist. I'm technically a Craigslist hire. Started with box trucks, 3 or 4 years ago, and I've been with the company ever since. The hiring process was a phone call and a short drive down the road, where my future manager had me drive ¼ mile on the fog line and again on the median line, ending with a 3 point turn in a parking lot. Ridiculous.
My point being, though, is that a lot of people on Craigslist do no background check, or any check, of any sort, beyond an interview.
Lots of these people run crumby companies, but sometimes, you get lucky, and the company is only as bad as you are.bottomdumpin Thanks this. -
I agree. If someone is following too close, I slow a bit to encourage them to pass if it is safe to do so. Once or twice I've even thrown on the hazards. Usually worksbottomdumpin Thanks this.

Well, I am not sure who taught you what, or why, but as far as I am concerned... not your problem. Or at least it should not have been. Your actions did result in it being your problem. If someone thinks that I am going to risk my life, my career, or my equipment to save them after their poor decision making? They just made the wrong bet. Aside from that, you have no way to know if the driver of the car behind you wasn't aware of what was developing ahead of you and was already on the brakes themselves.roadmap65 Thanks this.
