    Hi all,
With all the talk about idling and such...trying to save money...yet keeping drivers comfy...I have an idea...at least when it comes to reefer drivers.

What if........a reefer unit had a system set up where a small teeny fraction of the cold reefer air being circulated in the trailer...would be able to be vented into the tractor? My idea is this...think of the Idle Air venting system and their duct work (whatever its called...dryer tubing, lol). Make a reefer unit that is able to have a hose attached to it when the truck is parked and a small amount of the reefer air is circulated into the cab?

    Hmmmmmmmmmmm?
Of course, this would require a complete remake of the reefer unit itself and I dont know exactly how the unit itself works...but just a thought.

This has been discussed a few times on the the forum... The problem is no quick connect would handle the pressure a reefer produces..

Cooling coils like a heatercore, one in cab with fan, one inside the little door on the trailer, then run a small circulating pump between the two using a medium like ammonia, or even coolant.

Y'all are putting too much into it.. Why not just have a trap door on the trailer and cab, run insulated 5 inch hose between the two. Reefer should be able to handle the extra volume in the cab, no?

that is what Im thinking. Im not saying use all of the volume / pressure output of the reefer system, but just a portion of it. Sort of how the ventilation system works in vehicles where you turn a dial and a flappy thing opens up to certain angles to direct air around to the floor, dash, defroster...and other combos. Like I said before, I dont know the mechanics of the reefer unit, but if one could be designed where a small fraction of its output could be redirected at certain times...

Hmmmmmm - matteress in the corner of the trailer with an extra blanket...

Keep thinking outside of the box. There are some answers out there we just have to ask the right questions.

    Hey, zig

Getting air off the plenum would be easy enough, but you'd only have flow with the unit running. A better idea might be a double tube connected to the box and cab. 2 inline fans, one blowing, one sucking. That way it'd cool as long as box was cool instead of only when unit's running. It would also keep from generating negative pressure on the trailer if you only had suction fan.
And TJ, as far as quick connects if you tried to use the actual refrigerant to run an cooling coil; pressure isn't the issue, 10,000 psi fittings are readily available. The issue is the small loss of refrigerant at couple/uncouple. A tiny amount adds up. Such fittings are the weak point in an otherwise sealed system.

    2 problems.

    1. The oder in some loads.

    2. what to do in winter?

I think better thing for reefer drivers is one of those electric apu's and then you hook the batteries in the truck to the reefer so the reefer keeps it charged....if you are pulling someone else's reefer, you are gold, as its their fuel.

When I ran reefer, I used 20ft cables to hook reefer to truck batteries when I had to stay in NYC in the winter months, this kept bunk heater running, and my inverter running my laptop and tv.

Well I just tossed out the idea, haven't put too much thought into it as I have no money...always thinking of various inventions...thanks to my ADHD, lol. But this one seemed like a neat alternative to roasting.

As far as odors, a simple filtering system could probably be introduced.

For wintertime...I was thinking of that too....haven't worked out the bugs in my mind, just thinking of using the heat of the motor. IE...Im not sure how hot the exhaust is...but if a venting system was around a piece of the hot pipe and blew air from the motor or the engine area (not from the tail end of the pipe, lol..just a hot section of it)...that would bring warm air into the cab.
