Are truck break ins much of a problem at the truck stop?
Most guys in a truck have it running or APU on so one would guess someone is in there. When a truck is off one would guess the driver is off inside getting a shower or dinner or whatever. I worry leaving my truck unattended with all my stuff like computer etc in it. Even thought about leaving it running with the sleeper curtains closed so it appeared I was home. Are break ins common? Seems like a would be thief could watch the truck stop and pick out empty trucks pretty easily.

I've never had any issues. I'm sure it does happen though... Best you can do is lock your doors and try and find a good hiding spot for any valuables... Under the bunk is a good spot.

Most mega company trucks use the same keys, like Volvo for a while only had 8 different keys and then in 2015 went to 1 key fits all. Its not the break ins I would worry about its the amount of people that can unlock your truck. So pro tip, you ever get locked out of a "newer" truck ask around to use someone elses keys of the same make and model you have a good chance of it working.ajohnson and CasanovaCruiser Thank this. -
The more of a dive of a truck stop the more likely you'll get your truck broke into and of course lock up when leaving your rtruck.I've never got broke into but I've never stayed at real bad truck stops in bad neighborhoods either.

Yep. SKetchy places like the TA/Petro in Atlanta being a good example. Lots of dark places with secluded trucks.Chewy352, tech10171968, pattyj and 1 other person Thank this.

I kept my truck Pig stye just for that purpose. (And to keep ppl from coming in like border & prison guards)
I also his my money in my socks in a pile of clothes xD
Only thing I ever got stolen was a phone charger plug from a shop mechanic.
Chances are if you take your key & stick it in a truck of the same make. It will at least open one other truck on the lot. -
Don't assume nobody is inside a truck because it's not running. I never sleep with my truck running, I have a bunk heater. I do lock my doors when I'm sleeping. Brake into my truck when I'm in the sleeper and you get a bullet.

A sunny Sunday afternoon at the TA in Denmark, TN,
I went to the Cat Scale, parked next to a truck and went inside, got my scale ticket and got a sub at Subway.
The key didn't feel right but everything was there, the GPS, CB, Sirius and my brand new iPhone, .....
I think back and there was an old white man in the diner that looked at me,and as I walked back thru the lot ,the old pos truck I parked next to drove off.
He stole my Kindle I had charging on the bed and the charger.
I always leave a key in the ignition and use the air brake locks, or they might of stole the whole truck.
Now if I park for a short bit, I never park next to anyone, and for my breaks, I try to park between company trucks,
so once in noine years. -
And don't assume that because it is running, someone is in there. Drivers who idle, are likely to leave it running while they eat so when they get back it is comfortable.

Another thing drivers have a bad habit of doing is discussing their cargo. Its almost like a badge of honor with some drivers to brag about how much money their cargo is worth. Best way I know of to get hijacked is to start telling everybody at that deli counter about your load. When I was with USA Truck I picked up a very valuable load. The dock master told me to keep my mouth shut about my load and that there was a tracking device in the load plus one of those devices to measure acceleration and impacts. As a rule even if I was hauling air I never discussed what was in my trailer even with another driver from my company.
Another thing I see drivers do is after eating or buying something they think its cute to pull a wad of cash out of their pocket to pay for it. I know of a driver that got robbed at the TA in Montgomery Alabama for doing just that.Last edited: Jan 28, 2016
