Hello everyone. I'm doing research on a second truck. Im looking into getting a single axle truck with a single axle sun country trailer so that i can get tall vehicles. Anybody have experience with this setup?

Tall vehicles like sprinter vans? Look at an RGN lower to the ground, but costly. Some of Sun Country's trailers have a lowered section in the míddle to help stack longer vehicles. Are you sure a single exle trailer can carry enough weight?

@KANSAS TRANSIT
Stan is the resident expert on single axle trucks and Sun Country trailers, he has 6+ of them in his fleet.
In my experience with my single axle tractors and trailers, I love my single axle tractors and am looking for another pre-emission Volvo right now. You will be fine with weight on the tractor drive, I run 7 units on my Miller regularly without ever going over axle gross as most jurisdictions allow 22,000 or more and the heaviest I have ever grossed on my drive is 21,700 with three pickups, 3 small suv's, and a car I had 11,400 on my steer, 21,700 on the drive, and 32,500 on the trailer tandem. A single axle Sun Country should be fine since the most you can load is 5 units depending on size and I am sure they weigh a lot less than my 23,500 pound Miller does. I have been thinking about trading in our spare Miller T-7 for a Sun Country because we are starting to see a lot of Transit vans and only the flat roof fit on top of my Miller without taking up 2 spots.KANSAS TRANSIT and Terry270 Thank this. -

I ran a single axle tractor with a 53' Sun Country Single axle trailer in 2011-2012. The trailer was a true 4 car, because it has a hydraulic tilt lift on the front. It was a very versatile setup. It got good mileage, lower tolls, and could haul tall vehicles. You have to watch the trailer axle weight with larger vehicles on the back half.

Jeez, thanks Brian, hope I can live up to the "Expert" billing, lol
As Brian mentioned, we probably run as many or more pure 3 axle trucks and trailers in AH as anyone, we converted to strictly 3 axles setups early last year and had experimented with at least one or two S/A trucks and S/A trailers for about 3/4 years prior to changing the whole fleet to that configuration.
As I have stated before it works for us and what we haul, BUT keep in mind, we are running a small sleeper fairly lightweight truck and have shaved almost 2,000 pounds of of Sun Country standard trailer as we speced them.
We are running 8 identical trucks and trailers and average about 140,000 a year on each one, as mentioned, biggest issue IS overloading the rear of the trailer, so you have to be careful with that, otherwise the money saved on tires, tolls, maintenance, 2290's, fuel mileage etc. more than offsets the small percentage of loads that we pass up on.
Here are some pics in case you haven't seen them already, also if anyone is interested, I do have ONE of our units that will be up for sale shortly, and it is turn key with straps, ratchets, and lines, and is self contained.truckthatpassesyouby, brian991219, Banker and 4 others Thank this. -
Here was my rig, right before I put the decals on. It was an older design. I wish the pivot point was a bit higher, so I could have gotten further under with the #2 vehicle. Other than that it worked well. Easy to load!

I agree. It really needs to be a lift and tilt to get the full use out of itDominick253 and corderol181 Thank this.

Are the 5 car sun country better than getting a 7 car Cottrell? Also, can i use a single axle to haul a 2 axle sun country?
-
Depends on what your market is. If you are going to be hauling alot of big units then SC is hard to beat. If you are playing in the loadboard in the areas that I go then the 7 car is the way to go.
Yes you can and I actually recommend going with the tandem trailer. From what I've heard its pretty easy to overload one axle on the SC 5 carDominick253, corderol181 and brian991219 Thank this.
