He just have started there when Cl Werner started with only one truck.it would take that long to reach two million with this company.

Well there will be big trouble and turnover if that happens. All of the tenured drivers at GTI have been talking about this for more than two years now, and nothing has come of it. IF HL decides to dismantle the OTR dept at GTI, they'll loose all their best drivers. Even at 50 cents with Hazmat, 53 cents if we convert to HL's payroll, if I run less than 3000 miles average, I won't be out here, that's for sure! The way to make miles with GTI is to run hard and hit a drop yard early. This way you can D&H and get back on the road quick. IF GTI goes regional like HL, we won't be able to do that anymore. Is it possible HL will take over GTI completely? Probable... but will they shut down GTI's very profitable OTR department? Probably not...

Gordon spams the local job source and creigslist with job offers for local work at $14.40 an hour. Can't be all that great of an outfit if they pay less then a fast food worker in Seattle just up the street. If a guy can keep his license clean and get a free lunch by working at Burger King in Seattle($15hr) or Seatac just up the road why would you even consider Gordon in Pacific?

"Very profitable otr department" Gordon was hundreds of millions in the red when htld bought them. Look at it like this...is it more profitable to pay a separate driver to take a load from a drop yard to the consignie to unload and pay that drivers rate plus maintence on his truck or just make the otr driver wait and deliver the load and only be paying what it costs to have a driver sit. At a big self insured company I'd say making the otr guy wait is cheaper. Like I said it's sad and I'm by no means "deffending" htld... but it's the truth.

Now this is how you take something out of context! First, posting ads on Craigslist is not SPAM, it's an advertisement for a job. SPAM is unsolicited. Next, Seattle has a $15 minimum wage. $14.40 is for local work and there are a lot of new drivers that would appreciate the experience. Maybe you or I wouldn't work for that kind of money, but lots of people are making a lot less in Pacifica.
Apples to apples please...pattyj Thanks this. -
Owning mortgaged properties and owning all of your equipment is not the same as "being in the red." GTI has always turned a very nice profit and their annual reports were always in the black.
What I meant by a profitable OTR company was, as compared to the OTR industry for larger trucking companies. There's no doubt that running six 100 mile loads makes more money than one six hundred miles load; this is where the big money is. But without the long hauls, you don't get the short ones.
People can criticize Larry Gordon all they want, but the fact of the matter is, he is a very good man, made millions of dollars at a successful trucking company and retired setting himself and his children up for life. It never ceases to amaze me how little most people know about business, yet have so much to say... -
I very much agree with everything you said.Craigslist has a lot of legimate ads and then there are many not so good.Far as the pay, beggers cant be choosers. Also when you stay at some companies long enough you pay does increase.OriginalBigfoot Thanks this.

I was talking to a local driver in the Pacifica terminal last year that was making good money, ready to retire. Starting pay at an entry level job where my son works at AT&T is $16.60. He's gotten a raise every year since he started. He's been there six years now and brings down six figures every year.
When I went into trucking in 1978, my high school friend went to work at McDonald's for $1.79. He's now retired after working his way up to corporate becoming the director of human resources.
It's all in the eyes of the beholder...pattyj Thanks this. -
You've been driving along time,i was only 17 when you started.Depending where you live determines the pay. Some companies that pay hourly doesn't pay all their drivers the same they go by the state they live in.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spamming
Electronic spamming is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited messages (spam), especially advertising, as well as sending messages repeatedly on the same site.
Apples to apples. If drivers would be able to take $14.40 local work in Pacific, Gordon would not have to spam Job Source every week and Craigslist 2 to 4 times a day with these adds. The fact is they are looking for skilled truck drivers at less then fast food wages; that says a lot.
