I'm 57 years old, have been in trucking for only two years, and can tell you that I've never seen such a bunch of people who want to hang on to the past as bad as truckers do!
I'll bet there ain't two of you who are griping about the automatic transmission thing who are driving a manual car/pickup at home. Guess what... those all were manuals at one time too! Why aren't you up in arms over the invention of the automatic transmission in general!?!
Personally, I'm trying to figure why the heck it took so long for the trucking industry to go automatic!?!? The dang automatic transmission was invented 95 years ago and first put in a new sale auto 75 years ago!!!
What the heck!! IT'S ABOUT DOGGONE TIME!!!CharlesS Thanks this. -
Here again is the way I SEE it, Drive a Tractor Trailer On ICE or Snow, in the Midwest, The Trans Torq. Conv. keeps moving the Wheels. I have had a few times where the truck was going go into a jackknife, but I threw it in neutral, and lightly pulled on the trailer hand valve, then Very Lightly excellerated, and pulled out of it. A FREAKIN auto Trans, THOSE DRIVES ( WILLLLLLLLLLLL) keep turning. You can get it out of your head thinking, an auto is for NEW, Rookies, Green horn, Cherries, or what ever you want to call them, That cant drive an manual trans in a big truck. Learn how to drive a manual trans in a Big Truck first, because one day you might find a job, where they have only manual trucks, and when you goes outs wis zee boss man, you can show him you know how to drive anything. I have drove a auto trans in a big truck before, on dry ground no problem, but here in the Midwest in the winter, I prefer an manual. Put the truck in a ditch or cause a major accident on the interstate, because you couldn`t stop the truck from breakin loose, you gets me boot in you rear side. Im sure there are many senior drivers that now prefer or don't mind an auto trans, and MUCHO MANY, hate them. Guess which one I prefer? Good luck driver.

Lately I have been looking at drivers that go by me, and I have to tell ya, ####, I look at them and say to myself, you got to be kidding me, your driving a big truck? I know I was once that young, but I still shake my head, and cant see them really doing this, I know im a lot older now, and have a few years doing this, but hope they can go there whole career driving trucks without hurting any one. You have to have it in your blood, and want to do this Every day as SAFE AS POSSIBLE, and Lately I have never seen so many truck accidents in my life, Every day in the Chicago area, A TRUCK WRECK. THE AGRESS DRIVING HAS TO STOP.

Grandma and Grandpa were visiting their kids overnight . When Grandpa found a bottle of Viagra in his son's medicine cabinet, he asked about using one of the pills. The son said, "I don't think you should take one Dad, they're very strong and very expensive." "How much?" asked Grandpa. "$10.00 a pill," answered the son. "I don't care," said Grandpa, "I'd still like to try one, and before we leave in the morning, I'll put the money under the pillow. " Later the next morning, the son found $110 under the pillow. He called Grandpa and said, "I told you each pill was $10, not $110. "I know," said Grandpa. "The hundred is from Grandma!"

Because you can't slip an auto into neutral???
My truck can sit in Drive and not move until I tap the fuel... So why would the drives spin wildly out of control???
And our trailers don't have a hand break either.
I never plan on working for a company that doesn't drive autos... With all due respect, you can keep that clutch and stick... And if I do, I can learn it then, just like I learned to drive a big rig to begin with. No one knows how to do something until they learn it. Learn it when, if, you need it. Simple.
And I grew up in the Midwest too...
And I am glad you have a personal preference but I don't get the beat down those that like autos get... Guessing us "steering wheel holders" just should mock you old farts for living in the past??? No, that would be silly... Everyone has their own preferences and reasonings... So be it.
Snow and ice? I just took an auto through the northwest in a decent winter storm... Not really a problem... I was going slow and white knuckling it now and then...
Or just pull off and wait it out... Simple.
"and MUCHO MANY, hate them"
So it's majority rule? You like this type, I like that type... But since you outnumber me I don't get a choice???
Guess which one I prefer.
Good luck driver. {shrug}
