I think my last post was a little convoluted so I'll try a different tack. What equipment should I be leery of? What brands, engines, trailers, etc. should I avoid at all costs?
I ask because I looked at an '07 Pete/stinger setup, yesterday, and the trailer relied on a screw system, rather than hydraulic pressure to operate the ramps. Seems like a good concept, but BetaMax was once thought to be superior to VHS, if you catch my drift. I know I'm taking a chance with whatever I buy, I just want to do my due diligence and that starts with asking the experts: you guys. Thanks, again.

Don't know any thing about car hauling bodies, but any 07 truck
engine is best avoided. Cats are the worst. Pre 07 would be less
hassle. Or maybe 010 emissions if you need a dpf.venuspaw Thanks this. -
CATS are the worst??? Oh here we go....... I have lots of friends running 07 Petes with CATs some in-framed some not in 2016 and its still rolling and a CAT is a bad engine? Compared to what a 2010 - 2015 Cummings that needs rebuilt at 190k because the piston sleeves won't hold up and you gotta screw with EGR and DEF system? I would take the last year of the 379 any day with a kitty kat 600. I would be more concerned about the hydraulics in a 07 rather then a CAT engine. Your looking at about $20,000 to have you hoses redone and your chains converted to straps. Did you know the owner of the truck and ect.....

Hmmmm ever stop to wonder why they still make glider kits with a kitty kat? Guess its just a bad engine??? LMAO

Cat was a great engine , at one time . They are NOT putting 07 engines in those gliders. Just about any CAT before the bridge engines were great engines. That said there are reasons you can not get a Cat in anything but a glider.Hammer166 Thanks this.

CAT is a great engine and always will be a great engine. Ever look at a Paccar? Whats it remind you of, exactly? I must be mistaken I am pretty sure the right shop can drop a C15 engine or a Cummings into what every you want. Maybe i didn't drink the rookie cool aid tonight?

No CAT in a glider? Hmmmmmmmmmm

Never said they were not putting any Cats into gliders. Was saying they are not putting emission Cats in them ! Sort of defeats the point of a glider if you put a emission engine in. 3 of the first 5 trucks my last company got in did not leave the lot under their own power, day one. So all Cats were not great. EPA ruined them!

You are very mistaken. We have 2 identical w900 trucks, both with 550 CATs in them and both 2007 models and they have the emissions crap on them. The sister to the one that I drive was just inframed at 840k. The head was removed because of cracking but since they had it down that far they went ahead and did the whole thing. My truck, also a 2007, has 866k on it and still ticking.
Now we have never had a truck go 1 million miles before being opened up but we also don't pull light 80k loads either. The majority of our loads are in the 100 to 150k range so these trucks are worked. Oh and the only time my truck has been down since new was for axle seals, injector replacement and intake actuator replacement.
I can't even force the pyrometer over 900 nor the water temp over 200. If I turn the fan on before starting up the hill the water temp will never go over 190 in the summer pulling Homestake grossing 210.
The majority of the failures are how the truck is driven and how it is cared for.Terry270 Thanks this. -
Bingo we got a winner. I know allot of guys with non emission CATs who just don't go to Cali.... But I am just a rookie I will get this trucking stuff figured out one day...
