Trying to help somebody (walk them through the process) of registering their tractor in New York state and the mountain of paperwork is mind-numbing. Add to that having to personally register it in Albany(5 hour drive), not the local DMV. Now I see why everybody has Indiana tags!

Is there a 3rd party service to help and act as a go between between the truck owner and Albany?

My other question is about having out-of-state base plates. What state is the easiest to deal with? Can anybody point us in the direction of a service that will take care of out of state base plates?

    Many thanks.

You must have an office or reside in the state you have your IRP account in. You can't just buy a plate in another state.

    Wasn't sure how it worked.

I guess can canybody recommend a 3rd party go-between service in New York state that will work with the owner and the DMV?

Can't you just overnight it with an overnight envelope inside to send the plate and such back?

One would think but the local branch has told us we have to be there present and in person.

Have you called Albany? If the local branch can't do anything (FL is similar), then they probably don't have a clue of what the IRP office does.

Other than parking in downtown which can be a pain at times, Its not overly difficult to register a truck there. Is there something in particular they are confused with?

    zx150 Thanks this.

We called Albany, endless phone loops and very short on the phone expecting that we already knew the answers.....If we already knew the answers, we wouldn't ask the questions...LOL!

Just the mountain of paperwork it seems. My truck/plates are thru the carrier I'm leased to so I've really never had to mess directly with DMV.

The local branch gave me an instructional book "IRP-8 3/10" which I'm currently working thru. The confusing part it seems are all the documentation NY wants you to have: Certificate of county residence, credit card/bank records from 90 days(REALLY!?), etc. They want even more paperwork if registering via personally held LLC(what we're trying to do) so we're rounding everything up.

    Trans-com.us
Went to Albany this morning, wasn't bad at all. In and out in less than 45 minutes at irb desk. Seen a guy there who I'd seen before a couple of times who works for this trans-com.us . He said he was with the dmv for 30 years and now does this . I don't know what they charge but he seemed like a pretty decent character. He said he does all the bs there for four large fleets but is always willing to take on new customers. I did my own paperwork but I'd use this service if it's not too much just to save the trip there and the day wasted.
