Sheesh!!! I'm heading from the lowes DC in Voldotsa GA to bham AL. I was on some back road and came across a 13% downgrade for 3.5 and my jake brake works when it wants too

Anyway I prayed the whole way down because within the first 2 miles I could smell my brakes burning. Speed limit was 45mph and I'm hauling a 43000 pound load. I tried the control stabbing crap wasn't working at all, so I just rolled 70 the rest of the way down. Had to pull over to let brakes cool down. Had to check my drawers literally.

Any advice if it happens again guys? It would be greatly appreciated!!!

The 45 speed limit is for cars. Loaded heavy on a 13% grade you should be doing around 20 even if your jakes are working perfect.

Slow the heck down. Why would you try 45 on a grade like that? I think I'll stay on the west coast for a bit.

Edit: on cabbage your speed limit would be 18 MPH and it's only 6%. You should have been well under 10.

Basic Trucking 101, never depend on a Jake to work, you lucked out this time...Old rule of thumb was always same gear down the hill as going up, never shift on the down grade if possible, never shift crossing RR tracks, always ensure all your brakes are properly adjusted and work, etc, etc.....

I run southeast so I don't see to many downgrades at all, so I was shocked when I seen a grade for 13%

You were in the WRONG gear!! That's why...

A 13% grade is no Joke.. 10-15 mph in 3-4th gear..THATS IT, DONT RUSH IT..

    Your lucky to be alive

If you would have started down at 20 you should be able to keep it there without burning up the brakes. It sounds like you started down too fast and then got the brakes hot trying to slow down.
