Hey everyone I was thinking about going to trucking school at PEAK in Maryville, TN this summer. I would really like to work for Averitt Express from what I know about them so far. Can anyone give me advice on getting hired on with Averitt?

First thing is to call them and get in touch with a recruiter, they will walk you through the application process as you progress through driving school, they will want you to start as soon as you graduate. Be clean shaven although they do allow trimmed short facial hair, no visible tattoes with a short sleeved shirt, no long hair except women. They are a uniformed company but you get a yearly allowance for them. The tattoed exception Is always wearing a long sleeve, they must be covered not visible. I have been with Averitt for 18 months now but considering O/O for more flexibility on my own terms. That's not the best option for a new driver.

I don't have any tattoos and I'm close to Knoxville. Are they very strict on sleep apnea?

Yes they are, but they will provide a sleep study once 90 days has passed and insurance starts to cover the cost, also provides a c-pap machine through insurance. The sleep study is done in Cookeville, same location as orientation.

They only run auto trucks, which can severely limit your choices if you decide to work somewhere else later. There was a guy in here a while back who worked for them and he decided he wanted a local jobs. He was asking for recommendations of local outfits in his home town that only run autos because he didn't know how to shift gears. Just keep that in mind because Averitt is a starter company and you will want to move on, in a year or two, to a better paying gig.

Something glitches when I tried to respond to your question, pay is 600-650 a week before taxes and deductions, 350-550 after, once you get your own truck you'll get 37-39 per mile for up to a year, raises are quarterly I think depending on your performance, they currently cap at 45 after 5 years. Once on your own, if you run 2200-2800 miles take home should be 750-1200 dollars depending on your deductions. Hope that helps.

The trucks have amt's, automated manual transmissions, mine is an eaton 10, you have the option of manually shifting, you just don't have a clutch pedal, it uses a paddle shifter, but if go to another company you may need a remedial course for manual transmissions to get the job.

Like I said, they only run automatic transmissions. If you wanted to go to a company that only hires experienced drivers, they're mostly likely not gonna be willing to train you to shift gears, they'll just hire someone who can operate the equipment.

There's nothing wrong, per se, with autos. It's just that shifting gears is a skill that anyone who is serious about making a carreer out of driving big trucks needs to have. The truck I'm in now is an auto, but if it breaks down and they get me a loaner from Ryder with a 10 speed, I can drive it too because I spent years driving trucks with clutches.
