816,000 miles.. How bad are these motors?
I've spent the last few days digging through the forums here and in other places, I've read some postings on people having some issues, but not sure I've identified a trend.
It's in an 07 century, truck is in really good shape, everything looks good, just don't know anything about the motor? They changed oil when taken in on trade, so no good oil sample.
Can I get another 175k + out of before an inframe? What sort of money should I have set aside for the inframe (done right to get another 1mil out of)?
Going to use the truck in intermodal, so will be kept local and be worked on by the same guys..
Detroit 14L egr...?

I don't know anybody who had 1 mil miles on these engines without inframe. they usually go 700-800k miles. and stop because of broken valve, sunk liner or excessive oil consumption.
Lunchman Thanks this. -
I've got an '06 Century with that engine and got 930,000 miles on it. Uses 2 gallons of oil in 20,000 miles when I change it. Sample oil at every 20,000 change and comes back normal. I did put in a new set of injectors about 150,000 miles ago because I was having a problem with one of them. Also had to replace both the turbo and the EGR valve twice in its lifetime. Otherwise been very happy with the engine. My local Freightliner dealer says I should get at least 1.2 million miles out of it before an inframe should be considered.

I bought (2) 2006 century with 515hp motors. They were sister trucks with only a few digits on the VIN separating them. They both had less than 500K miles. By the time they reached the 800K on one of them i had to do an inframe, egr twice and other BS sensors to do with emission, and the other truck only got oil changes every 15k miles and never asked for anything more.

i have a 2004 14 liter egr motor 1.2 on it now but egr has been turned off since 850 never rebuilt yet

I had few epa04 series 60 before and non of them reached 1m miles. Detroit's advertised life of that engine is 800k miles.Lunchman Thanks this.

Huh, thanks everyone for their feedback, although it's about as clear as mud.
If I take it over to a Detroit dealer, pull the ECM report and see what they have for work history on the truck, what sort of things am I looking for?
Also, I've seen a few posts mentioning people have just dropped a 12.7 non egr in place of the 14l when the time comes. How feasible is this really? I think I've seen 12.7 reman engines can be had for a decent price? What should I be looking at to see if this is an option?
Thanks again everyone for their feedback! -
Probably what you can take out of all these replies is that there is some luck involved with having a healthy engine. You never really know. One thing that would be good to know was how often the oil was changed, but you might not be able to find that out. Don't think it is legal to put a non egr engine in this truck. Need to keep with what was required for the model year and more and more shops are enforcing this because they get fined if they get caught doing this work.

once the egr is gone or off there as good or better than most motors
