I went through the same thing with my youngest brother who was early retired from a corporate job a few months ago.
He's not hurting for $$$$, but needs to keep busy, and would prefer not paying the full price for health insurance.
He also has a few friends who were pushed out in the same purge who were interested.
Almost all of them had some romantic notion of what trucking is about, how hard you have to work, and the real working conditions you have to put up with. It's not like the annual road trip to the beach you do once a year. :)

I'm not trying to talk anybody out of it, just to be realistic after 30 plus years in this industry, with very few 'good' jobs during that period.

If you hate your job, and have no obligations at home to take care of, try it.

Ignore what any website has about "experience required" because all those I listed hire new cdl grads. Some websites aren't up to date.

Be a company driver for awhile before buying a truck.
Join www.OOIDA.com to learn the business end of owning trucks.
US Express has a cdl school in Olive Branch,MS.
Milan Express has a cdl school in Jackson,TN.
Can you afford a private cdl school? Many are cheap at community colleges.

In 10 months you will be able to go about anywhere you want. It's not really a bad deal because it's a means to an end; you get the diploma and a cdl along with just enough experience to move to another company any time you want.
Right near you in Tampa is Indian River Transport that requires 12 months experience and you can run long runs coast to coast. @Kbaby66

Between $35-50k if you go OTR. You have a couple of months off during the summer right? Maybe pack up your car and take a three week long road trip and only sleep in your car and shower at truck stops. That will give you an accurate taste of what life on the road is about. Then you can make a more informed decision if this is something you want to give up your 9-5 for.
