I am trying to make a nice setup with radio, magnet mount antenna and mic for use in a pickup. Use mostly for vacation and weather/road reports. Cobra 29LTD Classic and K30 antenna is what I've liked so far. Any help would be appreciated and thanks I advance.

I just put one in my pick up recently and from everything I've read it seems put the antenna in middle center of the roof. And make sure the radio is grounded good to the frame and wire positive to battery for less noise interference and you should be good to go
-
Is the radio/antenna I like good ones to use?
-
Yea, for just vacation and road updates it would be perfect for that. A good quality coax cable will make or break that setup, in my opinion
-
You'll be fine, just have the antenna tuned and be careful not to pinch the coax in the door and it will work.
rabbiporkchop and Demo378 Thank this. -
Ive always used wilson 1000 mag mount, if you prefer smaller attennae wilson little wil works good ,just rated at less power and not as tall as 1000, but if u plan on running radio stock without a amp not an issue. Cobra 29 ltd classic is good radio but does not have weather unless you get the 29lx or 29ldt wx. Bearcat 880 is good or uniden 78ltw, both have weather. You dont have to run radio directly to battery there are power cords you can purchase that can be plugged into the lighter or aux power port and they are usually rated at 20 amps which is more than enough, however running to the battery does help with elimination of engine noise and interference, hope this helps.

I use my old Cobra 25, peaked and tuned of course.....and I think we replaced the final with a 2SC 1969 and appropriate driver..need to double check that. I know we did it one of my radios. I use a Wilson Lil' Wil antenna in the middle of the roof, Road King 56, well actually a Astatic with RK inards and It works pretty decent. I out talk/hear better than most of the late model big trucks out there. Just used it on a recent trip in the wifey's car and it performed well. I'd expect yours to be equal to it. I've got a Wilson 1000 mag mount that works better, but for a temporary set up I usually just use the Lil Wil.
An interesting note. On this vehicle, 2012 Mazda 3, I'm at a 1.9:1 on ch. 1 and 40 and at 1.5:1 on 19. Good enough. But on my last vehicle, 2003 GMC Envoy, I could go down below ch 1 about 25 channels with the same set up. For some reason, luggage rack?, more roof surface? the antenna was broader banded. FWIW.rabbiporkchop and Demo378 Thank this. -
Ok, I've been looking at some post and I think I'm going with a Cobra 25LTD or 29 LTD with either a Wilson Lil Wil or K30 antenna. I'll probably run out to Walcott, IA to have it matched and tuned to the antenna! Thanks guys!!
-
Whatever you do don't let the guys in Walcott tamper with the settings inside the radio. Other than that they should be fine for antenna work

Is that advice based on a previous experience, word of mouth, or just an assumption. I dont think they would be in business for as long as they have if they were a hack, clip, and spread coil shop, that being said do they clip limiters and make a dosy look good or do they perform proper alignment following manufacture service manual, because i dont know because i have never dealt with, but i would like to find out in the event someday i do decide to buy from them. Anyone who has used them your input would be appreciated.
