So I installed my grandfather's old CB from the mid-1980's. I got a pretty good SWR and seems to be set up ok. But I've got a strange problem. Sometimes, when I first turn it on, I get no reception. not even the normal background fuzz. RX indicator doesn't move at all. If I Key the mic for a second, it fires up. All seems well and not another problem. Until I turn it off and let it sit for a while. Any idea what causes this?

What kind of radio? I have an old Galaxy that did the same thing and all it was that the control knobs needed some electronic spray worked through them to clean the connections...it.has worked fine since.

I'm going to say it's the switch in the mic........ (Those old GE's were known for being good radios.) You might take the mic apart and use a good electronic cleaner/lubricant on the contacts of the switch then work the button several times and see if that doesn't clean it up and solve your problem. With the cheap China junk now days, replacing the switch is about the only way to fix one.

I had a Midland from the early-mid 80's that looked similar to that one and after a few years it developed the same issue. You had to bump the mic button to bring the receiver to life, every so often.

My girlfriend had some extra trading stamps left over she didn't know what to do with and got me a little Cobra, again of similar style, though not exact. A year or two later, it had developed the same issue. I always figured it may have been a component breakdown of some kind but never knew for sure. Replacing mics didn't fix the issue.
