They did that at Walmart when I was in receiving. We would rent reefers for the turkeys and such. I had experience wirh reefers from Stevens and I told them I'd monitor them on my shift but it was still the department managers responsibility to check the fuel level and call the leasing office to send a fuel truck when it got to a 1/4 tank.
Well one day the meat department manager neglected to check on the turkey reefer. I mentioned to my department manager in receiving that night I hadn't heard it run in a while. I went outside to check and it was bone dry!
We immediately called management and looked inside. It had been off for hours and the turkeys near the tail were already thawed out!
Department manager tried to pin it on me but I said I wasn't responsible for checking the fuel, he was and it likely ran out if fuel before my shift even started. I just happened to notice it wasn't running.
They sold the thawed turkeys to the associates for $5 each.
