Ask the guys who want to go to TMC to ask the recruiter, "Will there be mutual respect at the orientation and training for us veterans, or are your "instructors" going to be purposely insulting, ridiculing and cursing at me as if I were going through boot camp again?" I don't see any reason for that BS. All they are really doing is trying to get you to quit because they still get paid by the government for every warm body that signs up for their "training" program. It's an old game that goes way back. As long as you're politically connected (playing the ##### with the government), you get $$$ that other reputable companies don't get.

I went through a GI bill class A (before CDL) school in the late 70's that pulled the same BS, but I stuck it out. Didn't realize at the time that I should have told them, "Hey, look, I'm paying you guys to train me so cut the sh## and we'll get along just fine. I'll treat you with respect if you treat me with respect. I've already done my time." But, I didn't have life all figured out yet, so I endured it. The training actually sucked and all they did was push you through enough just to get your class A license and they didn't care about anything after that.

I'm not an 88M either. I'm a 19D so hopefully I will be good to go.

Day 3: Today was more instructor interaction as we went through powerpoints on Safety and also got issued the FMCSR greenbook. We discussed some sections in there on qualifications for CDL, disqualifications, etc... We watched some videos on shifting also and man talk about overwhelmed. That Eaton Super 10 looks so confusing. Luckily we aren't driving those here at the school. I'm sure I will just need some time with it but the shifting and then the switch to shift and shift again was a bit much. Will need some hands on with that one. We also watched some videos on coupling and un-coupling. After lunch we watched some more safety videos and had to take some quizzes in what to do in certain driving situations. Everyone seemed to be tracking all this pretty good as it was pretty basic stuff. Taking what we learned and thinking about it in terms of driving a tractor trailer put things in perspective. We didn't go over any endorsement tests today but hopefully we get some time later to continue practicing the tests. Basically it sounds like we are on our own to go down and do our endorsements at DDS minus the HAZMAT fingerprints. Since I don't have a vehicle I will have to find someone that plans on getting all their endorsements to go down with. Most of my class say they don't want any endorsements besides HAZMAT and some don't want that. I want all my endorsements and want to get it done while I am here. I may have to get a cab to DDS this Saturday to knock those out. I don't understand why they don't want them but I feel like it will be good to have them all.
Listening to some of my classmates talk about who they want to work for is kind of confusing because they want some of these companies that I know are not very good because I see it here on the forums. But hey maybe they feel that's best for them. I have no interest in Trans Am and Werner and they seem to be the popular choice. I said I was interested in going Tanker and got funny looks.
We also got issued a huge Rand McNally Atlas and I will be looking it over tonight. Tomorrow is trip planning and hours of service. Should be interesting.

On a side note I am hearing all new drivers at Schneider are getting automatics. I don't know how I feel about that honestly. I need time on Manuals and starting off with a company with Autos will make if difficult if I ever go to a company with manuals. I have no problem with autos but I would just like to start with Manuals. I will have to look into this rumor.

All in all a good day of training and I learned a lot. The instrutors have assured us don't be nervous about shifting because we will get it once we get hands on. But man those videos have me sweating. Lol

^^^^ Congrats, man! BTW~ My friend, Justin, recently left SNI after a year ... i mentioned his blog earlier on, but he started in an auto; maybe it's changed?!? Check the SNI threads, but I sure hope you at least get to train in a manual!
Thanks for the update; just don't get the "funny looks" about tanker; it's so much easier! YOU load / pump-on = an hour. YOU unload / pump-off = an hour. End of story. Food grade, may be different....or gasoline. Tank-washes not necessary with asphalt!
God will lead you where he wants you no matter HOW you cut it, bro! Congrats on day 3! :)

ps: The shifting will come SO naturally to you. There's a formula, with the rpm's in a PB but I'm not gonna muddle your head. Just listen, feel, look, and respond. Let her lead, to a point. It becomes second nature. Relax and tune in~!! KUDOS!

Yes I'm going to go back and look at his blog. It was good. I'm a make a post on the Schneider thread and see if anyone can confirm that.
I think my classmates think Tanker is too hard. That's what I get from them. They want drop and hook. No touch. I want what I can make the most money on for my family. Open up some opportunities. I'm sticking with Tanker. You are so right! HE will guide me where he wants me! Thank you for your encouragement. I will continue to update and if I have any questions will post up.

feel free to PM anytime, and check some of @Chinatown 's posts. . . what is harder about tanking?!? NADA. Not only THAT . . . we RARELY (if EVER) have to alley-dock; the only 45 and 90's are at truck-stops!~ There's also another "newish" guy on here; think his name is @GolfPro .... he started out tanking, but only problem HE had was the weight of the hoses, etc. Golf hands aren't strong, according to him; but his journey is worth a read. The good, the bad, and the honest. I enjoyed his posts.
Justin quit because of the run-around chasing pumpkins in the dry-van / drop & hook world of SNI. He really had his heart in it, too. Another reason I believe tankers to be more stable of freight/product moving! Another tanker to look at, @GasHauler. Granted, you'd need way more experience before that type of haul, but his posts are very thorough, honest, and he knows his stuff; from what I read.
The Flat-bedders are also an amazing breed; I do it in the off-season, but I'm not 20 anymore. I respect the HECK outta them guys / gals.
Either way you decide to go; you are there!
I commend you, my man. God Bless.

Yes I read @GolfPro thread. It was really entertaining. He was actually at a company in Savannah I was looking at also. I need to go back and look at it. I actually thought about Flatbed with TMC but I think I am too old for all that tarping stuff lol. 20 years in the Army and I don't think I want to work that hard. Seems like a lot of work. I know it's not the same but I have some experience with Army Fuelers. In Iraq if we couldn't find the fuel guy and had to go on a mission, I would just fuel my Bradley myself. I taught myself how to do it to save time. I really think I can handle Tanker so we will see. About to check out the Tanker forum now.

Thanks for the updates man. I can't wait to get in class myself. Still won't be going until May 21st.

I can't believe so e of those guys want to go to Werner. I guess to each his own. However I feel like some people just not put in the effort to research their career field before diving in.
