Over the years I've been on an elk hunt, hog hunting, quail, bear and deer. Most times without proper permits but always a guest of a local.

I carry a lite rod and small tackle box... just in case. Takes up no space at all in the truck and worth every penny.

You can get a fishing license at any Walmart. A 5 day pass is available.

    JC1971 Thanks this.

I've not done any fishing myself on the road like this, but I've wanted to. I'm local now and don't think I'll be OTR again for awhile. I have a buddy that drives for Ryder and he recently went out west to Kent Washington. This was a first time route for him, one of those "once-in-awhile" scenarios as he usually does a 34 at home. He's a big-time fisherman and I had fun looking for an ideal spot for him to hunker down for the 34 on his way back. I located a rest area on I-84 near Morgan Utah that had a river right there behind the parking areas. (Weber River) He went online and was able to purchase a 2 day (I think?) permit. He caught a few, mostly cutthroat trout. That was roughly a month ago. Recently, I found a small lake near one of his receivers (less than a mile) in Iowa. There too, you're able to go online and purchase a license. I'm guessing that most states have online license/permit sales which makes it easier chasing down a Wal-Mart.

I must also add: I have ran into several rest areas and even a few truck stops in the past where a creek or river runs behind it. You can go on Google Maps and start looking for places that you run through a lot, zoom in, and locate these waterways. Good luck!

I've tried fishing on the road before, but trust me, it's a total waste of time.

There are NO FISH ON THE ROAD!!!!

On the other hand, there ARE fish in lakes and streams.

Preston Hinkle and JC1971 Thank this.
