That's the 40' regulation to the rear axle. It's technically not a bridge law since that regulates weight between axles

You can go up to 12.5 on the steers. If need be. I roll around with 12.7 on full tanks in to truckee.

No need for a 50' tape. If you have a standard 3' setback kingpin just measure 10' from the rear of the trailer.

Trailer length - kingpin setback - desired setting = amount from rear.
    53'-3'=50'. 50'-40'=10' from the rear.

Simple rule of thumb that I went by- on a 53 with riveted sectioned skin panels, your rear axle would be 2 ½ panels from the rear of the trailer. Never failed me in CA.

That assumes all makes of trailers are built the same. What is yours out of curiosity?

I've been trucking for 15 years and I never been to California. What's your point?

...And some people would be wise to not continue down that "road".

I assumed he's picking up out there somewhere and wants to know what to do ahead of time.

If you don't have one of these, get yourself one as soon as you can. There is LOTS of useful information within, including the answer to your question.
