He's paying 41cpm in taxes, which means he's profiting somewhere in the ballpark of ~$1.05-$2.75 depending on tax rate.

Why is it sad? Plenty of good jobs out there paying more than that. If that is all a guy makes, it's not anyones fault but his own.

Let me be clear, my profit per mile, i.e. Adjusted gross income divided by miles ran is a higher per mile average than what some people gross.
Not bragging, but trying to state the fact you can make money leasing to a carrier..

I was in a meeting 2 years ago where the speaker was the CEOs of ATBS,he is a numbers man and showed the figures that his clients that leased to LS had a higher per mile revenue per year that drivers running on their own. Note I said his clients, not everyone is his client. That did not include me.

All that said it is more up to the individual as to how much he makes. Business is based on relationships and who you associate with, some people figure it out and some never do. I work with some drivers and agents that have no clue about how this business works and then iWork with some of the best in the business. Guess who I try to partner with.
Before one goes into this business I suggest they learn how broker boards work, not about finding and getting a load, but about how the freight gets there to be posted.
I have first hand knowledge of a load last week.
We were under bid. The company that got the bid sold(brokere) the load to a company with no trucks, they sold it to another company company that sold it to the carrier that hauled it. (A company with contractors,)some poor lease purchase driver hauled a 12 wide flatbed load 1250 miles for 2500 gross, less permits and his% worked out to about $1.14 per mile. Four companies made money and a fleese purchase driver went to Florida very cheap, over 1200 was sucked of the top of a good load (?)while it bounced around on a public load board.
One must know his markets and who he is dealing with to succeed.
Is LS the best option, yes and no, I am sure there are better options but I am to old to change my ways.
More on what I was asked to do this week after the job is over. It paid a lot better that a load cut 4 times going to Florida.

I been busy past few days.Lo and behold someone did the math before I could.
Working with your numbers and statements already made and your supplied data we can come up with a solution to this equation. Taking the estimated profit range per mile and splitting it in half I came to 1.85 per mile profit.
Then old man statement that he ran lots of miles I trimmed down to 2200 miles per week as an average.
PM X TM = TP so the grand total profit for Mr. Old Man works out to 391,534.00 a year.
I'm surprised we didn't see his picture in Forbes or Business weekly.
Now adding in operating expense The total could be over a Million dollars gross revenue for MR. Old Man.
I ran this hypothesis by my wife who is finishing an accounting degree this year and she couldn't stop laughing.

Dude, why you gotta be so freaking obtuse. He didn't say he profits 400k a year, and certainly didn't say he runs a 100k miles a year.

Basically your whole arguement in this thread and many others boils down to, with your pick up truck you haven't been making good money in todays market so it must mean no one with class 8 trucks can.

I'm not obtuse, you are slow and lack the ability to assemble post data in a usable format.
Let me direct to this Old Man statement and I quote : "I will not post rates in a public forum, but my taxes for 2014 worked out .41 per mile, more that a lot of drivers wages, and yes I have a good accountant, and I ran a lot of miles."
Now correct me if I'm wrong ?? Are not taxes paid on profit after all expense's are deducted?

Now let's examine another statement made by Double Yellow and I quot : " He's paying 41cpm in taxes, which means he's profiting somewhere in the ballpark of ~$1.05-$2.75 depending on tax rate."
That is a Reasonable estimate based on a broad tax rate and I used the middle as my figure for the post.

Now examine your post :"He didn't say he profits 400k a year, and certainly didn't say he runs a 100k miles a year."
Using these Statements The close to 400K is correct. The only thing wrong is that I put the wrong word in the post it should have been 400K total revenue and close to 200K profit.
Even at that MR old man would be the poster boy for trucking and Donald Trump would be seeking his counsel. Go to your favorite truck stop and tell those you meet that you made 200K profit last year and see the response you get? Of course there will be few with your mentality that can massage each others ego.
I quit drinking the kool aid a few years ago.
