Haven't had time to search. How do the permits work?
Could I work outside of Cali, come to Cali and park it for some time, and then head out?

I don't think you will have too much trouble. I'm no expert, but I've seen non-CARB trucks go in and out of CA all the time without being harassed. From what I have been told, a lot has to do if your truck has out of state plates on it.

There you go.....
-
The main exemptions:
5,000 total miles per year (driven in all states)
or
1,000 miles driven inside California per year
or
3-day pass (once a year)
There are some others (small fleet, economic hardship, etc) but if you haven't been reporting since 2014 you're probably not eligible for these...rachi, mp4694330 and Straight Stacks Thank this. -
I'm willing to bet no one is reporting. But oldies are still roaming around.
I picked up a load on friday. With a 2006 w9 waiting behind me. He works for a company 15 miles south of my company. And i know of an 02 w9 still going in. That truck's company is 1 mile from my company. -
The last time i was at the TA in Coachella the dot came in and put every old truck out of service and even refers that were not compliant.
Would not let them leave the parking lot. -
The dot can't enforce CARB regulations.51.50, Diesel Dave, roshea and 1 other person Thank this.

@truckthatpassesyouby my advice would be to go about your business and try not to buy fuel in CA.
