Hi, recently picked up a 1980 pete 359. Previous owner put current engine in it. He claimed it was a 350 big cam 3 but im thinking its a small cam. The data plate is ofcourse missing. Engine sn-32104951. Cummins quickserve only tells me it was originally built in may of 77(right in the changeover). The follower plates are small prolly 3-4" tall. So looks like a small cam. Except it has a pressed steel oil pan, and a pulse flow manifold, the aftercooler looks like big cam also. But then the waterpump is v-belt not serpentine. Engine has me confused but believing its simply a small cam. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
What cummins is this? ???????

I retract that last bit. The waterpump is serpentine not v-belt. Could all these big cam parts been put on a small cam? Is it some weird change over frankin engine updated to a bc3. Previous owner rebuilt 150k ago run believably so. But has big cam oil pressure 45 cold idle 30 hot idle

Post it in the truck forums and someone can probably figure it out for you.

It says NH855 1977 model. -

Do you have a CPL?
-
small cam engines have a compression release set up on them.
-
I don't have the cpl reckon tag was removed or fell off. I've been on the barrington site also. Follower covers look more like small cam. But small cam didn't have steel pans serpent belts or pulse flow. I see no noticeable compression release on this engine.hmm why do people let identification tags fall off.

My Big Cam 1 says Big Cam on the block itself towards the backside on the drivers side. This is for a 1979 K.W., CPL 369

Should be on the block, like mentioned above as an 855 block could have had more than one rebuild over the years with changes to the belt drives and other bolt ons. Get the stamped serial number off the block and call cummins they will be able to tell you what the block was originally and the cpl. From that you can than figure out what it be built into
