why greyhound? why?

They put you on the hound 1) because it's cheap, and 2) it's a psychological preparation for the life upon which new driver is about to embark, and 3) it sends a subtle message that if you fail, this will be your humiliating fate.

Which is perfect for a company like Swift or CR England, who invite everyone to orientation, then release a quarter of the incoming prospects while another half walk out.

 

Not all companies bring their prospective drivers in by bus; the only ones that do are the ones that bring in 'drivers' with a pulse, toss them against the wall and see which ones stick. Avoid those companies.

 

Can't really blame the companies for busing student drivers. Most will quit or get run off anyway.

True! And many are not the least bit thankful for a free ride! They feel they deserve more.

 

Jefferson is regional though. They also use snow tires, Greyhound didn't when I was there. Both serviced Joplin. You'd see the Greyhound trying to leave the terminal just spinning his tires in the snow. Jefferson would just pull away, no problem.

 

Prey for our servicemen. Soldiers have to pile into Greyhounds to be taken from base to base for maneuvers. But it's better than those cattle haulers I've seen soldiers being ferried on on the base. Marines don't travel on Greyhound with the frequency that soldiers do. What I liked about the marines is they'd have their rifles and ammo with them on the bus so if we ever got ambushed they'd be ready.

The soldiers would keep their rifles in rifle trunks and their ammo would be shipped ahead of them by truck.

 

We had strippers from Dallas charter 2 Greyhounds and they went from strip club to strip club as some promotional deal with the other strip clubs. The drivers got in trouble 'cause the girls were flashing all the motorists (daytime). Drivers got stopped by cops and the local Dallas media did a story on it. No arrests, just a lot of people calling the cops.

 

You were on a local run. Greyhound even goes to towns where nobody has taken the bus in 100 years. They are required by law to go to certain towns, especially in Texas where the Texas Railroad Commission regulates buses.

sometimes a state will give Greyhound a few buses, on the contingency that Greyhound service small non-profitable towns. The states also offer other incentives so poor people in small towns will be serviced.
