I posed a question yesterday and I noticed some responses said to call companies. Is this a normal practice? Will companies answer the questions about jobs to someone off the street? I'm new to the trucking industry and will be going to school this spring/summer to get my CDL A. I'm looking to find a job that will bring me home most nights. Whether it be a dedicated run, P D, or regional. Am I being realistic about finding such work that pays good.

You are not someone "off the street", you are a potential driver for their company. During the call they will be sizing you up and qualifying you as a potential driver as you are sizing them up and qualifying them as a potential employer.
If you call and get a cold shoulder, move on to the next company on the list. They need to sell you on the idea of working for them just as much as you need to sell them on the idea of hiring you.WhyDriveTruck, Grijon, TPC and 1 other person Thank this. -
And good luck when you go to get your CDL and hope you find an awesome job after.

Like anything in life, you get out what ya put in. When my kids were looking for work while in high school and later in college. I asked them how many hours do you want to work a week? 20 hours. Well, spend 20 hours a week filling out apps. 40 hours! Spend that amount of time a week looking for work that gives you 40 hours. Want a local job? You get the idea. Good luck.
Grijon, TPC and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this. -
recruiters will answer your questions but make it short and to the point as they are busy. Also it's best to call them in the afternoon.Mornings are hectic especially Mondays. Some companies have a comment section on their website and theyre good about either calling or e-mailing you back fairly soon after you send the comment.TPC Thanks this.

If you are looking to stay local then don't call .
Get dressed in clean nice clothes and knock on their door .
Ask if the person that does the truck driver hiring has a few minutes to spare to speak with you about their operations .
Face time is still the best way to get a local job here in the Midwest.
The old hands doing the hiring for most local companies around here would rather see you than look at a piece of paper or talk to a voice .
At least this has been my experience .
I must also say in 35 years I have never driven for a mega company nor will I as I refuse to sell my soul to the devil that cheaply LOL.misterG, MidWest_MacDaddy, TripleSix and 1 other person Thank this. -
Im in the same boat, I'm used to fill out app/send in resume, wait for call. Will have to call a bunch of people. Will be getting my class a mid may

I'm doing the calling thing this week also. Filled out 18 online applications and only got replies from two so going through the list following up on the phone. It's been mostly leaving voice mail messages though.

I called a few today, OD, nemf, kag. They all said bring resume/fill out app. Kag said requires 1-2 years so I won't bother with that

This. Despite my less than stellar work history, AND my last employer straight lying out his butt claiming I had a DOT reportable, preventable accident, I still got a local job, mostly thanks to them doing an in-person interview. In fact, they didn't even bother interviewing anyone else after me lol. Well, that was mostly due to needing the position filled ASAP.
