My first driving job was with Stevens. I went to a private school here in TN then went to Stevens' orientation in Dallas after I had my cdl.
My experience with them was positive overall. I started with them in summer of '09 and worked there for 2.5 years. I received first rate otr training that had served me well ever since. I made decent money there and I didn't sit much. I went to all 48 states and every major city in the US, I went over nearly every major mountain pass in the country, and I got a ton of invaluable experience.
The major down side with Stevens, as others have stated, is time away from home. They expect 4-6 weeks out at a time, but they will tell you this upfront so it's not like it's a surprise. I would stay out ~5 weeks then take a week off.
I've never regretted starting out at Stevens. There are lots of people who trash them on this board, but it's just like any other job. Your experience will depend heavily on what YOU make of it.
Hope this helps and good luck.ElFannyBandido, Ga Dawg141, SHOJim and 1 other person Thank this. -
I agree with everything you said. I started with them, after attending school on my own, in October 2010. I left last March. I hardly ever sat, made ok money, no complaints. However, they are a training company, and their business model reflects such. I went in knowing that and never regretted my decision or 4+ years I spent with them. The experience was invaluable.ElFannyBandido and SHOJim Thank this.

I also started out with Stevens Transport . Good training with good equipment . Not the best pay but great experience . You will drive coast to coast and see a lot of the country . I drive local now because I found a local job that pays hourly and I am home every night .I don't regret starting with Stevens .

My experience hasn't been the same as the other guys in terms of time off. I currently work for Stevens as a contractor. In 5 months I have been home 3 times, a week in length each time, by choice. I've got another week off coming up in April.
And the others guys are right, if you're a company driver it's not the best pay. I'm not a company driver though, been there done that. -
I having been dealing with Steven's transport for a few years now. It's a starter company that hires new drivers straight out of school. They will pay for you to goto school if the money isn't available. Steven's otr Driver training program is good. All other company's that hire new drivers recognizes that and will hire you with no problems. Like Warner, Swift, rhoel, Schneider, crst,us express and many more. I know cause I know a lot of students that didn't really like how Steven's operate left after three months and was hired by anothereply company. They all did comment that by the time they completed they're training they felt they were prepared and confident they could do the job and be safe. I have trained a lot of Steven's students so they could pass the state exam to get they're cdl. Training pay is a little tight. Like $450.00 a week/28cents a mile then up to 32cpm. Running a lot of miles tho. Brand new trucks. They just bought 500 new KW. Some even automatic. They are refrigerated Freight so all trucks and trailers will be new and clean and most facilities you go to will be nice and clean also. FDA make sure everything is clean in top condition. If you have any ? Let me know. Stay away from CR England. Huge number of students per one instructor is what I hear. We get a lot of they're students come to our school with horror stories.
