Im starting to see a growing trend in auto transport and in trucking in general. Owner/ Operators who don't want to be responsible for their own equipment or business. Im talking about guys who are leased on to a company. For some strange reason they believe the company is their personal bailout bank for repairs, etc. Since when is someone responsible for your equipment?
Recently we had an "owner/operator" with the company I am leased to refuse loads to certain areas within our service area because he said, " My truck is old and I couldn't handle the tow bill if I broke down." WTF????!!!!! When told by the dispatcher that when he leased on that he was informed that he would be required to run to all the dealers in the service area he said he understood that but he has been having transmission issues with his truck. When the dispatcher told him to get it fixed, he said that he was hoping the company would foot the bill and then take it out of his settlements. he also said that he was under the impression that the company would take care of the tow bill if one came up.
He informed the dispatcher that's what he is paying the company 20% of his revenue for. Is he delirious?
So called owner/operators

When U go O/O the baby sitting is over and its ALL ON U. Why do some people find that so hard to comprehend?
-
Haha these companies barely dispatch us well enough or keep us loaded for their %20. If I get an envelope and paperclip with my paperwork I consider myself getting my money's worth.
-
The freight industry commonly does just that, they advance money for repairs, fuel, tolls, and so on, keeping the "owner/operator" tied to them until the advances are repaid. If the driver in question were a high producer I might help them out, but for a contractor to expect me to foot the bill, no way.
4mer trucker and Hammer166 Thank this. -
Do you require an escrow account? I was lucky the people I leased to helped me many times. Without that I would have been done long before. They got burned by two other owner operators, but I paid them back in full.
flood Thanks this. -
We do require an escrow account.

If they make you have an escrow account seems like you're almost a lease purchase driver. I guess for some that's good to help with equipment failures but I don't expect help from anyone these days. Although it would be appreciated

Well I am leased to a Big Brother Mega Carrier, and yeah, its a nice safety net to know that if a huge repair bill comes up. Big Bro will pay it, and let me pay them back, instead of having a trk that is broke and not being able to be fixed, until I get a loan from a bank or am just lucky enough to have enough money in the bank to cover it.
Secondly, part of the deal with being an O/O is having the right to refuse loads. At least with a large proportion of carriers out here. Forced Dispatch is for company drivers, usually with being an owner, having a choice is implied or a right given.40 ft trailing, Leftlanehauler, fordconvert and 1 other person Thank this. -
One of the main brokers I use have there own shop and mechanics. I use them only when necessary. They deduct in full of the services rendered in my following period of settlement. I will purchased the parts necessary, they provide the labor.

I kinda agree with the owner op. I signed on for no forced dispatch, regardless. Footing the bill for my repair? no, thats bad money management. Escrow acct? by choice, maybe, by force? nope. If you dont like my choices, cut me loose, if I dont like yours, i will cut you loose. Its business.
Leftlanehauler, Terry270 and skinnyb01 Thank this.
