Automatics for Training?

Or one could say that if trucking companies don't offer autos then they are significantly limiting their potential pool of future employees... {flip side of the coin}

 

Wile more trucks and truck fleets are going automatic, at this point in time, there at still plenty of companies that haven't gone there yet, at least not entirely. Admittedly, I fall into the pro-manual camp; I've driven both, and in my view, automatics have definite shortcomings. To each his/her own, though; if someone prefers automatics, then that's obviously the way they should go.

I drive for Abilene Motor Express and they offer an In House post CDL program and our whole fleet is autos... Volvos, Kenworths, Freightliners, and a few Macks too.

 

They run all 48 states. Lots of miles and 100% no-touch freight. You're in the hiring area.

 

Calex Logistics in Pittston,PA hires new cdl grads. You'd have to call about the automatic transmissions because I don't know. They used to require 12 mos. experience, but changed now to new cdl grads.
Their reefer division runs coast to coast.

 

I heard this same statement 12 plus years ago (1st phase when many companies were switching over to autos) and now many of those companies that had a ton of autos, have switched back to manual transmissions. Eventually you will need to be put in a rental, due to a break down and the rental companies often only have a 10 speed manual fleet. Trust me, if you have not driven a 10 speed since school (and never mastered it) you will not be able to hop in that rental and safely and efficiently drive it to your next location across the country.

 

I'll 2nd, 3rd and 4th this one! Don't do that to yourself. I just checked and PennDOT DOES show an "E" Restriction for no manual trans. So if you go the lazy road and complete the process in an auto your not going to be happy when your dream job shows up that your (almost) qualified for but can't because you need to re-roadtest to have that restriction removed.
