I have a line to lease a truck( '07 w900 260k miles with a 475 isx and a 13 speed) from a private person who's husband died and needs to move it. It would be a lease to own. That said, right now I haul crude in Wyoming and am on my way to 120k this year if it holds out.
My dilemma comes in that I would prefer to continue hauling tanker but I'd like to get this truck and start my own business. I'm not opposed to doing other work but I'd like to stay regional and in the northwest. I've been doing some searching and it seems most of these companies want a new truck, some 7 years max, some 10, which would put the truck out of their fleet next year.
I guess my ultimate question is would it even be worth it monetarily? I am driven and analytical, I can make sound decisions which is why I'm so confused on what I should do right now. The trucking industry seems more competitive than ever with big companies in general taking over with company drivers. Do I just need to look around more and or possibly relocate? Thanks for any responses!
Maybe it's not for me...?

Sounds like a nice low miles unit. With the kind of money you're making you should easily be able to purchase that one and park it until you find the right company. If his widow thinks it's a gold mine I would pass. I would only buy it if I could get a really good deal on the unit. Any company with an age restriction is not worth leasing to so don't even worry about that. If you don't believe me take a look at the rates they pay their operators. It's very rare for a company with a 7 or 10 year age limit on contractor equipment to be paying any more than the typical $1 a mile plus surcharge, which always has been and always will be a joke. Look for companies paying on perecentage. One other thing, do not fall in love with the first truck you find. There is really nothing special about a 10 year old truck with 260,000 miles on it. No you don't see those every day but don't let that become a gotta have it fever.

Thanks for the reply, I'm not in love but with it only being first teir of emmissions and $70k its a pretty solid price for the unit in my opinion given the cost of the pre emissions trucks now days. It is immaculate with full documentation. Getting it and letting it sit is an interesting idea until I could find a solid job.

I'd have to look at the truck. $70,000 is a lot of money but I'm not in the market and out of touch what a truck like that would go for. I bought mine several years ago and it sat parked for 6 months until I was good and ready to hop in it and get with it. I did pay cash for it though so no payments. With the way things are in the oil fields these days you should be hesitant to do such a thing if you're not buying it outright. I'm guessing since you are considering lease purchasing it from the widow you don't have the cash to buy it outright? In your shoes I would wait until I did but that is just me. You're making $120,000 a year it won't take long to save up a great big pile of cash. And the market out here is really rough right now as far as getting decent rates.

No, I don't have the money. I've been putting all of my extra cash at this job into paying off debt, and I'm near done. I guess we'll see how it goes, I have been contacting a few more companies to see what they have to say. Unless I can increase the cash im making though it just doesn't make sense....unless the oilfield tanks even harder. I may also have to look into more of a niche market of trucking that isn't getting pounded on rates like most of it is.

Smaller carriers have seen (lived) the problems with the new trucks first hand.
As long as it passes a dot inspection and looks good you will be all set.
I'm no expert and the 07s bring top dollar but the price seems a little high...
Is it a heavy spec truck...?2k4_8 Thanks this. -
If it had a Cat in it, it would bring $70k around here in an instant, little high for a Cummins IMO.
-
2007 Cat? Isn't that the engine that has class action lawsuits against Cat for it being a lemon?2k4_8 Thanks this.

Here's an article in Overdrive about it. 2007 with a Cat is worth less than with a Cummins.

$120k/year in a company truck? I would think that over real good. And $70k seems a bit high for an 07 anything if you ask me unless it's been recently gone through bumper to bumper.
RERM Thanks this.
