What kind of hard hat do you prefer?

I've always worn the "standard" hard hat, visor in front. I need to get a new hard hat and was thinking of getting one with the visor/brim all the way around, because I hope it will keep the rain out better. Then there is the cowboy hat style. I like the sun protection it offers but it must be a lot heavier.

    So what are your thoughts?

I'm fully aware that a plastic egg shell isn't going to save me if I fall off of a load, so please spare me the lecture. I don't make the rules.

Sometimes I forget to take it off. Then I realize why my neck hurts. Buts that's only because I've had it on for a couple hours. Look cool! 1221151617a.jpg

I know at some places they don't allow those silly cowboy hardhats. I've been using the full brim ones for years and you're right they definitely help in the rain a bit, also help keep some sun off. Some of the new ones are incredibly lightweight and comfortable

I wear the standard "V" hard hat but we can also get the "turtle" one that's the full brim but I've never tried one. I have a real nice carbon fiber one I like a lot but my company doesn't want me to wear it.

It's a hard hat, and meets the requirements. I've had one receiver tell me I needed a hard hat. I showed the hat, and they were stoked. No problems anywhere else.

We were delivering some bridge beams and the company safety guy argued with one of our guys about the cowboy hard hat. He was going to kick him off the job site unless he got another hat. Even though it meets all standards.

The one that I don't have to wear. I sweat profusely when working, and the felt on the band soaks it all up and seems to like dripping it down right in my eyes. It's irritating to say the least (and makes me have to stop working to wipe it up).

I really wish some of these "safety" people/groups would stop and think a minute before imposing these standards. If I'm not smart enough to move out of the way of a crane lifting 20,000 lbs of steel beam/tube, a hardhat isn't going to help if that crane has an issue and drops them on me.

Another complaint I have is safety glasses. Being someone with -6.25 vision in both eyes, I'm effectively blind without my prescription glasses. Now, the only pair of safety glasses I can find that fits over them is that "goggle" type, and in certain types of weather (cold and/or humid) they fog up the instant I put them on... making me effectively blind. And yet there are places I go to that enforce the use of safety glasses to the point where they won't load you unless you are wearing them.

It's almost as if they don't give a rat's behind about actual safety.

I go to a few place and it specifically states on their required PPE sheets "no cowboy style hardhats". Off the top of my head, Phillips 66 in E. St. louis comes to mind. Not sure why, have no idea, but kinda wish they did because I could always use a good laugh
