Have a driver heading into Florida, no overhang either end going down, but of course he gets talking to another driver that tells him NO overhang off a 53 is legal in Fl. so he calls me because his load coming out will be 3' off the front of the trailer, so I look up the statue and of course it's confusing as hell, BUT looks to me that overhang off a 53 needs a permit, so I call Fl. DOT tell them EXACTLY what I have, he says overhang between truck sleeper and front of trailer not an issue, as long as it is a semi, not a pickup?
I have been going to Fl. for over 20 years, although it is not a state we send a lot of units too, sometimes with overhang, never had an issue, anybody want to chime in on this?
OK, you guys that run Florida,

I have never had any trouble but have heard of others that have. I would just purchase the permit, its $20 per year and could save a lot of hassle. Oh and it doesn't make you specify which truck so it works for your whole fleet lol.
-
Except you have to have the yellow copy of the permit in the truck if inspected. Which takes a couple weeks to get. That said, went in twice last year with over hang off both ends with no issues. Though had the permit ready to go.
Terry270 Thanks this. -
Yeah that is why I called, but he is picking up today so ordering a permit that might get here in a week is out of the question, we are going to roll and if we get stopped I will pay the ticket at the coop.
But this is another one of those situations that just isn't clear, and then of course you have states that the language is clear, but they don't enforce it, not that it makes it right, just wish they would all get on the same page.
For regional I'm sure it can be a pain, but for those that cross as many state lines as we do, it is ridiculous that what is good in one state is against the law in another.brian991219 and Terry270 Thank this. -
I heard of one case where a driver with a similar setup to yours(s/a and 53' trailer) was stopped in FL and they attempted to give him a ticket but he stuck to his guns and told them that he is a tractor trailer combination and is allowed 75' in length (which he was under and I'm sure you will be too) and they eventually let him go.

Yeah, we are right at 71' bumper to taillights empty, so even with 4' off the back I am right at 75'.

I don't get to talk to guys as much since I'm not in the terminal, is Missouri still making high-mounts unload at the scale? I know they were tearing the high-mounts up around Christmas time.
KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
State of WA is also big on length. Must have a permit for any overhang on a high mount. 56' is all you get. bumper to bumper on the load
KANSAS TRANSIT and skinnyb01 Thank this. -

Sorry to start a thread and let you guys hanging, but I took a much needed break and headed back east to be with my family on Easter and celebrate my oldest Grand daughters 9th birthday, had a blast!
Just got back at my desk and figured I better chime in before someone sent a posse looking for me.
On to matters at hand, Jack we did get pooped right before I left in Mo, with about 3 off the front and a little off the back, did not make us unload, did a full insp. which we passed and gave us a ticket for the overhang 150.00 and put us on our way.
As far as the Florida load, no issues what so ever, driver did get pulled unto a scale even though we do have prepass and was left go, so I am going to assume that what the DOT guy I called said is right???
Either something changed, or somebody got a lot of bad info, either way, hope you all had a great Easter, and with that, ONWARD!!! lol
