Just a note, July of 2014 I left a company I had been with for 3.5 years. When I did, I gave two weeks notice, made sure I vacuumed out my tractor, washed it, and made a point to go in and shake hands with the owner.
Fast forward to march of 2016 and after falling off a flat bed trailer on December 10, breaking my left wrist in 3 places, finishing the run ( ten more stops ) getting close to the shop and going to the e room, then almost four months on workmans comp, I was let go when I told them I was ready to come back to work. There were issues, I had severe problems with my dispatcher, a ticket in my wifes car, and I had applied to another company while I was on workmans comp. To make a long story short, I walked back in to my old company this morning and was hired back, with a smile and hand shake.
I didn't burn that bridge and was able to go back across.

There is also something to be said for leaving peaceably when your employer is less than stellar or particularly.. shady. I recently had an experience where I left a company on short notice and had... issues... later on.
Grijon Thanks this. -
I gotta say, they really made me feel welcome, I walked out with a smile. Guess I now know where I should stay.

Great post! Yes that is something that comes with age. I've never blown up and made a scene but I've seen people do it and at the moment they feel like king of the world. On the way home not so much. You learn that with age. It's better to just bow out, let them realize you're a decent person and one day you might cross their minds and they are reminded that you are so much better than who they have now. That's how you win in life, the same goes for relationships, something I wished I learned in my early 20's and not 30s.

I like how you named this thread. Burning bridges is one of the most common things truckers do when they change jobs. In my driving career I have had to repair a bridge. It is not pleasant doing it either.
