Hello I would like to ask to be enlightened on the fuel filter system on a cat c15 sdp.
Cat mechanic was telling me that the primary fuel filter needs to be changed every 5k miles to protect emissions components and secondary every 15k.
He went to say that truck idling the fuel is filtered through the secondary and once truck is running it's filtered through the primary. This makes no sense to me and he couldn't really explain his reasoning
Cat c 15 fuel filter question

the fuel runs though both filters all the time your mechanic is nuts
BoxCarKidd and Duckman1005 Thank this. -
Your guy is 1/2 right....
The art head fuel supply is taken between the 2 fuel filters... So any fuel going to the art head has only been thru the primary filter.....
This is why you have to change that filter so often . To try to keep the art head alive..... Good luck
Also the little screen filter over by the art head should be changed every 6 months or so.
All the fuel that goes into the engine goes thru both filters..rollin coal Thanks this. -
I guess those sdp cats are kinda special.
Cat sdp Thanks this. -
We are special ....

Thank you very much that makes perfect sense. Do you know what the fuel pressure spec is on these sdp?
-
No.... But I'll find out.
Might take a day or 2 -
Thank I would really appreciate it. Driver had to take the truck to the cat dealer because it lost power. The mechanic checked pressure and it was supposedly
-
220 psi and according to him it's needs to be in the low 300s. They changed the pump and both filters and truck is running good again. I'm familiar with the earlier acerts and 3406e and when I messed with the pump I knew 110 was the max or else I was risking the injector orings starting to leak from the added pressure
-
That's kinda correct ...
Fuel Transfer pump is like 90 psi..... However the art head gets fuel at 300 psi... The fuel goes thru a couple of solenoids ( not sure of the proper name) and they bump the fuel psi up...
I'm guessing this thing threw an emissions fit...?
