I always take off my seat belt as soon as I pull up to a dock, truckstop parking slot etc. The seat belt pulls on me when I'm trying to back in a hole. I guess if someone from my safety department saw that, they could make an issue. A 32 year old habit is hard to break

    OK, life lesson number 1.
If you are not the owner of the company your are always an expendable warm body. Nobody is guaranteed employment, everybody is replaceable, everyone. As your pay goes up the accountants red pen comes down wondering why drivers will do it for a lot less than you. They only need a reason and a seat belt ticket is all they need. That's why I went to O/O as fast as I could afford to, nobody dictates my future, I live and die by my own decisions . . . . . . and the wifes. :notworthy:

I'm not saying I don't use my seat belt, I'm just saying there are times that I have been heading down the road, went to adjust my seat belt only to realize it wasn't buckled. Next move was to buckle up.

As far as state cops pulling over new trucks, it just provides evidence to what I have always believed. These guys are state employees who are told they have to do a certain number of inspections every month. They don't get any bonus for finding violations, so pick the trucks that should be the easiest to inspect. Almost every time I have been inspected they wanted to get through it as quick as possible. I give them everything they need and make some small talk. Seldom have I ever been held up longer than 15 minutes.

...besides, if you had your choice, would you be crawling around under an older truck with a good thick layer of grease/road grime on the underside where you'll need a shower and a clean change of clothes when you're done? Or that nice, clean, shiney new truck you could inspect in your Sunday best? Most officers would rather stay clean. I know in my own experience, I've been more apt to be pulled over and inspected after washing the truck than I am when it's been a while. Anecdotal, I know...but that's what I've seen. Besides, a 15-20 year old truck didn't get to be that old (and still be on the road) by being neglected. That 3-5 year old truck is probably more likely to be in a state of disrepair as it nears the end of its service life at the company which bought it, and they aren't wanting to sink any more money into it than necessary before selling it to some sucker with big dreams of being an O/O.

I don't like being "crucified" on my insurance, because some knucklehead ate his windshield due to his complacency/laziness (especially here in Michigan, with our insane no-fault insurance laws). In Michigan, a seat belt ticket is $65. Far from crucifixion.

    CONDENSED VERSION:
    Thumbs up to the company.

I am curiously how that whole "kicking a State Trooper's ###" thing would have worked out for you.

Anyone who would "kick the Trooper's ###" for issuing a well deserved ticket should in NO way call them self a king.

    Sorry.
