Does anyone know or worked in the container division in the southeast? I got a chance to get in but the pay seems low compared to other old dominion openings. The guy said i would starting 54cpm and 20 n some change. In one year get bumped to 23, then 2 yr 26.
Should i get in the container division?

Dude if you have the opportunity you better take it. I've been with OD my entire career. I ran linehaul out of ATL...then my wife got on and we ran team. It was great and we made a ton of money. Then we had a baby, and I bought a truck, and went to work with OD as an owner / operator pulling containers out of the port. Two months ago they approached me about coming back to the company side, and the gig sounded pretty good. I accepted, and at first I thought I had made a bad decision, but now I couldn't be happier. Last week I was very very close to $2,000, but you can expect $1,500 on average. You get mileage pay + as soon as you get to a shipper you get hourly pay. My best weeks as an o/o for them I made $2,300 - $2,400, and I busted my ###. When stuff broke, I fixed it. Not my problem anymore haha. Dispatch is learning, but easy to work with. Did I mention they gave me a brand new 2017 Cascadia with 300 miles on it? I'm home almost every night...Come on dude...any questions, I'm here to answer.

The $2,300 - $2,400 as an o/o was bring home after fuel, ins, etc BTW. But those we're very long days, and I had to make the port every day. Now I don't have to worry about running the port if I don't want to. I actually drop and hook at the yard mostly.

Also, you mentioned pay compared to other OD jobs. Running LTL linehaul on the wild board is one of the most unpredictable though rewarding driver jobs you will have. Say you run a 330 mile turn (660 mile total) one day. Leaving at 1am...getting back at around 1 or 2pm. Then you take your 10 hours...sleep, and are ready to go at 11pm or 12 midnight, but don't get a dispatch until 7pm the next day. You slept during 10 hours...stayed awake waiting, and now are just getting ready to nap again when you get called. It's a great job, don't get me wrong, but you have to be able to adapt and always be ready. I mean if you get tired, please pull over and sleep, but the freight has to move so you can't make that a habit. In contrast, with containers, you know what you're doing in advance. So there's no 24 hour on call stuff.

That's great pay for a company driver, no wonder why the website never shows any openings in my area...

Thanks man. Unfortunately i did not get the job due to my MVR. SO I'm stuck otr......

I'm sorry to hear that. Keep driving safe, and reapply regularly. If I can help let me know.

I don't know about intermodal, but with linehaul your best bet is to show up in person. Chicago has 2 terminals now.HalpinUout Thanks this.
-
Uturnz what kind of schedule do you have and do you know if Greensboro or Durham NC run containers?
-
2 terminals? I go to the one off of 47th st. quite a bit. Is the other one DES? Hate going to either one unless I can get out before 0600.
