I wanted to go over the road earlier in life but family obligations prevented it. Well, dumped the wife, kids are grown and gone so now I guess is the best time.

I am older, 52, and have no home obligations. If someone is willing to not have to be home very much is the money MUCH better or just a little better?

It's much better if you go with the right company. Get with a good coast to coast company; it's great for a single guy.
Couple of example of good coast to coast outfits are Trimac Transportation and Abilene Motor Express. They both hire new cdl grads.
Get a passport card if you want Canada runs.
Get a TWIC ID Card if you go with Trimac Transportation. This is for entry to sea ports, military bases, chemical plants, rail yards. Google for nearest TWIC office.

Roehl is not a bad company to go with either. Been there almost a year now and am happy. Only advice I would give is to stay in a the National fleets. When I was in the regional fleet I was only averaging 1900 miles per week and paychecks were very low. Moved over to dedicated and miles went up to an average of 2600 +/-. Some guys who stay out are up over 3K per week. Training is excellent.

Thanks for the replies everyone, "Canned Spam" I am a former Navy Submariner, if I can serve my country in a metal tube I figure I can make a living in a plastic cell.

I worked for Roehl for a couple years, the training was very good, but I could never average more than 1900 miles a week, sat all the time. Was never late, no accidents, no complaining, but I was on National flatbed so that may have been the problem. When you are new they will run you hard but as your pay goes up your miles go down. Still a good place to start but not a long term situation.

Dr. Flush, I am at a job now that only pays 900 every two weeks so even with those low miles I believe it would be a raise, am I right?

Not Dr. Flush, but I think it would be a very nice raise for you. Those checks mean very low miles.

Might help Paul if you mention your location! You will receive options in your area that you may not be aware of.

Yes it would, but more important it could be a stepping stone to better things, it was for me.
