###### if you don't?
So my accountant calls me today with the amount I owe the IRS for last year, yeah, it's a lot. Between getting divorced and having to file 2015 as single, even though I was married for 46 weeks threw a lot of tax burden on me.
But aside from that, I did buy new trailers last year, but made what I thought was a great deal on the new ones, and sold the old ones for a decent number, of course they were all depreciated out so all of that money is seen as profit.
On top of that I decided to keep my trucks for another year, so no other write offs to speak of, (large number write offs, not nickel and dime stuff) So of course the accountant tells me what I already know, I should buy newer equipment for more write offs.
But I just hate to jump into a huge note as I am still not confident in this economy, so buy new equipment every year and carry a large note that if things get bad you may not recover.
Or, hold your cards close to the vest, keep your equipment in good shape, keep up on money saving technology, strive for low operations cost and high fuel mileage, make smart business deals and pay through the nose on taxes, so even after all these years of surviving what am I missing?
Of course the accountant says, well if you didn't make any money, you wouldn't be paying taxes, be happy???
It just seems like the small business owner gets hammered no matter what, I'm not crying as much as I am wondering how the rest of you are handling this? Vacation home set up as satellite office, off shore account, trust fund???
Thanks for listening, all comments welcome.

Wish I knew as well. If you're big enough like GE it's OK to come up empty handed at tax time and if you are a complete loser you get paid by the government. The working middle class gets screwed.

We are in the same boat as you are, Stan. I hear guys all the time, say they don't have to pay in, etc. But I cannot figure out how they are doing it.
We are like you, though, not sure that new equipment, with the high price tag and payments is the answer, since the rates and even the number of loads has been spotty at best.
Plus, hubby knows his truck like the back of his hand. IDK anymore. The IRS can make working for someone else look really appealing at times.

The other issue that we have run into is this, a LOT of the added income from last year was simply fuel being 2.00 a gal. or less instead of 4.00 a gal. or more, so if you DON'T understand that and think you are making a killing, go out and buy new equipment, and your loan payments go up, your interest payment goes up, and your accessible emergency funds go down, then what happens IF/WHEN fuel goes back up again?
I think we can ALL remember how many carriers went out of business when fuel jumped from 2.00 to 5.00 last time, and the companies it didn't put out of business it sure made nervous, me included!!!Last edited: Apr 8, 2016

I looked at a new truck back in 2012. Seeing the new motors, fuel mileage and then looked at the freight and economy. Decided it would not support a payment and if it did it would mean more dedicated time to it.
Add that to the fight with the IRS for 3 years, my heart is not in the least bit interest in expanding or renewing.bullhaulerswife, NavigatorWife and KANSAS TRANSIT Thank this. -
At 70¢ per mile or less for all miles, I'd imagine not!NavigatorWife Thanks this.

I make between 800 and 1200 net a week. I just do not want to work more than 3 - 4 days a week now. I bought this truck new and the rates were lower. But, then again, car haulers and big trucks have costly issues and makes one wonder about them.NavigatorWife Thanks this.

You know Stan, I've got really lucky, I'm getting paid almost what I would make in the truck, when you factor in how much it cost to eat on the road. I really thought I would miss being in the truck. To be honest there is very very little draw that direction and I've been almost three years off the road. I just don't miss it.

Do you have an individual 401k for yourself? Last time i looked at it you could defer tax on up to $51,000 dollars in any tax year($17500 base, and a % of income after that). The tax would of course be paid when you take it after 59yrs old or whatever the age is now and most likely your income would be much less especially if your retired so you would pay much less overall tax. I put a big chunk in mine every year and usually buy some sort of stock.
