As I monkey two years in to a career where I finally feel I found my niche, I would love nothing more then to avoid situations such as this. I just need to learn to take my time more and look harder. Most accidents are avoidable. And this one was. If only I would have been smarter and taken the time to look harder. I should have known some person out there would be on my blind side in thebdarknwith no lights on!

I go with the if its been longer than 5 seconds or so, somebody's there. And i still have them sneak in on me, have had the check, nobody, look forward to check traffic speed, look right back, what 3 seconds? And someones there? Wtf! When merging I tend to either brake back at least 5 mph, or gas it up at least 5. Tends to show you where the numb nuts are...

Another tip [from experience] related to small vehicles in bad spots (especially when another highway's traffic flow blends in from the right) ... when there is bright sun, and dark shade next to your vehicle, vehicles can be difficult to notice down in the shade while your eyes are adjusted to brighter direct sunlight. You have to double and triple check to insure there's nothing there, especially a smaller, darker vehicle.

I agree they sound like a Lawnmower going down the road but' going back to the conversation use those mirrors and if all else fails stick your head out the window and take a quick look to make sure it is clear and safe.

Smart cars aren't. Even the NTSB warns they shouldn't be driven.
